Dominic O'Reilly

Born to the mean streets of Stoke on Trent, Dominic is now an economic immigrant in the Manchester area; living in a box in Stockport and jumping around various temp jobs which range in excitement from typing address information for the Royal Mail, through typing Census forms, all the way up to typing railway station surveys. When he can clear his mind of postcode information and defective platform copers, he writes stories in genres including horror, humour and erotica- typically depending on what mood he's in, and his total career earnings prior to the release of his debut novel amounted to 33 US Dollars, for which he was very grateful. Dominic also writes about himself in the third person for no apparent reason.

    About the Author

    Triangles

So there are three ships. A is at a right angle to B and C, A's exterior angle between north and C is 135 degrees, while B's between north and A is 45. The length of side ac is 6, while ab is 8. The hypotenuse bc is, obviously, the square root of 6 squared plus 8 squared, so that's 10. Does that get me any nearer to finding the bearing of B from C? Does it hell.

Alison took her eyes away from the paper and pondered while idly pressing her teeth on the arm of her glasses. Her small room had been set up perfectly as a place of study; spotless and free of distractions, apart from a potted plant by the window which she'd read somewhere would help her to think. Outside the window, however, evening was descending, and droves of Alison's fellow students were passing by on their way to wherever it was they all went to on a Friday night. As a group of guys who'd clearly started the festivities early walked past singing dirty rugby songs at the tops of their voices, Alison had to clench her teeth to suppress a scream. She shut the blinds, turned on her desk lamp, and put in the ear plugs she kept in a drawer.

This should really be simple enough, she thought, but it had been a long time since she'd done any trigonometry and had to consult the sheets of formulae she kept blu-tacked on the walls of her dormitory, which were otherwise austere barring a few photos of her family and pets from back home.

Sine of an angle equals opposite side over hypotenuse, she read from a sheet generously annotated with marker pen (which has been scientifically proven to help stimulate the mind, she'd insisted to any visitors who'd dared to suggest she'd just wanted to add some colour). Then she found what she wanted,

Tangent equals opposite over adjacent she read with some satisfaction which was quickly extinguished when a thud came from the wall behind her; Charlotte's room.

Maybe she's just dropped something, Alison told herself, unconvinced, and went back to her desk. The one thud was replaced by another, and then some giggling against which her ear plugs offered scant protection. So James was in there too, the realisation came far more quickly than the answers to her maths problem. James, the one boy Alison thought had been interested in her since she'd came here. She'd more than felt that way about him. It doesn't matter, she thought, they'll be going out on the town soon enough, and got back to work.

Okay, opposite side 8 (thud) over adjacent side 6 equals one and (thud) a third. She switched on her calculator. Angle C must be the tangent… (squeal) nought point nought two. That's got to be wrong. And then she did let out a low scream of frustration, and threw her earplugs down onto the otherwise spotless floor.

Completely defeated, Alison lay down on her hard bed. The banging was coming from the wall only a few inches away from her, and she was sure Charlotte had moved her own bed beside that wall just to rub it in. After all, James had been the only one who Alison had really opened up to during this first month of university, whose humour always left her with a smile, and whose kindness had smoothed over her pangs of homesickness. He'd reached forward to kiss her once, when they'd been drinking wine one night in the kitchen, but she'd backed off scared, not
