Mark Stevens stood by the window in his office, gazing out to the street below. A broken man.

How easy it would be to jump eight stories and end it all on that sidewalk down there. He had no family. No one would miss him. Certainly not the staff. He’d miss this lovely old building, with its many old-fashioned attributes. How many of those ghastly new high-rise buildings allowed the boss to lock himself away from the staff for few moments during the day? Or so he could enjoy a quiet lunch?

Something stopped him, held him back from doing the horrendous thing he’d contemplated for the past few minutes. Surely, there had to be a way.

He’d been tearing his hair out for days, his mind a jumble of uncoordinated thoughts, trying to think of ways to save his company from an aggressive takeover. If the bidders won, in a little over an hour, he’d lose everything he’d worked for.

A lifetime’s work gone down the drain in one fell swoop. Even his secretary had quit on him.

He moved away from the window lest, in a brief instant of weakness, he took that final step, hearing in his head the words someone has spoken on the TV last night. Don’t do anything you can’t take back. Instead, he sat hunched over his desk, his head in his hands. He looked up suddenly when he heard his door open and realized someone had come into his office.

For one brief moment, his deep despair slid into joy when he recognized the delicious young blonde, Maddie Harper, from the typing pool one floor below—the temporary typist with the nicely rounded breasts. The one who made him wish he were ten years younger. Many were the times he had lingered
