It was Donna's birthday today. She had only been informed
that there would be a big surprise, and despite all of her begging, pleading,
and guessing, Will had kept it entirely a secret. No hints, nothing. They got
up together, and Will resisted sex ("We'll fuck later, I promise," he
said). Brunch was the first thing lined up for the day, so they went and ate at
a fancy, nearby restaurant. The food was really fabulous, and Will pat himself
on the back for making such a good food choice. The men for the sex-buffet had
been calling Will at various times during the day, leaving voicemails and
asking some questions. He was sneaking out as much as possible, ensuring that
he got back with them in a timely fashion. Donna was obviously suspicious, but
since she was promised a birthday surprise, she let it all slide.

"Will, can you please just tell me what the surprise
is?" she asked. The suspense was killing Donna.

"No way, I can't do that. Not until it's time,"
Will said. That was all he'd give away.

"Well then, when is it time?"

"I can't tell. You'll just have to wait. I know you'll
love it." He smiled. She would love it.

They were both hungry, having not eaten since morning. This restaurant was a good choice; it was more or less a clever world-fusion buffet. Not just one type of food or the other, but nearly everything. American food, Chinese food, Mexican food...

This would be a real feast. It was all laid out before them, and they could eat as much as they wanted.

Will loaded up his plate and sat down next to Donna. She had just gotten a plate of salad, while he had already gone for the main course. They had been dating for a few years now, originally meeting in undergrad. She was a women’s studies major, and he was into anthropology. They met at a meeting that they both had to attend for their respective classes. Will often thought back at that meeting, patting himself on the back for not skipping it like he would have liked to.

The food's pretty good, huh? asked Will.

Yeah, I like this place. I'm surprised we never found it before. She looked around between bites: It's not that busy though, especially for a Friday night.

Whatever, Donna. You'll be fine. I'm sure you won't get food poisoning. He smiled at her. She had a run-in a few years earlier with food poisoning and always seemed to be paranoid now.

Yeah, you're probably right. This is good anyway. Time for some real food now.
