Chapter One

Fancy gold lettering set into the glass panels on a pair of mahogany doors was like a sign from God.

Menger Bar.

Oh, hell yes! A cold libation was exactly what Candy Dillon needed. She grabbed the brass handle, pulled the door open, and stepped into the blessedly dark lounge, snagging the last available stool at the hotel bar.

The rodeo had come to San Antonio, and most of the patrons dressed for the occasion in Western shirts, hats, jeans, and boots, making her feel severely overdressed in her stuffy executive garb. Dropping her heavy briefcase in front of the stool, she shrugged out of her suit jacket and hung it on the chair before sliding onto the seat.

A handsome bartender sidled over and tipped his Stetson. Welcome to the Menger, ma’am. What’s your pleasure?

She couldn’t see much of him behind the tall mahogany bar, but the visible parts were very nice. Brown hair, dark eyes, chiseled features, inviting smile, and broad shoulders filling out a long-sleeved Western shirt with white piping and pearl snaps. As he ran a cloth over the polished surface, muscles flexed, impressive biceps stretching the material.

I’m not sure…. Her gaze shot to the nametag pinned to his shirt. Luke. It’s been a tough day, and I’m in the mood for something sinfully sweet and indulgent. Any suggestions?
