Chapter 1: The Summer Cabin

Don't be embarrassed.

I'm not embarrassed.

I'd be a little embarrassed, said Tammy. Do you think we're trying to set you up?

She was smiling, trying to make light of an uncomfortable situation. Kristen should have laughed, played it off, but the truth was...she was totally embarrassed.

Are you kidding me? she said. I wouldn't be surprised if Dominic just backed out completely.

Ugh! said Tammy. Can you imagine? She deepened her voice to sound like the big dumb jock Dominic was. 'Uh, duuuuudes, I, uh, I forgot I had to polish my football, so I can't go or whatever.' Tammy giggled at herself, hoping Kristen would join her this time.

She didn't. Kristen was miserable. Spending the week at the lake was her favorite time of year. It was an annual tradition that she, Tammy and Kim had kept up since college. That musty old cabin in the woods, with its stone fireplace and starlit skies, was the one place she felt she could really relax and let her hair down. That had been true for the last three years. Now, it was ruined.

The cabin belonged to Tammy's uncle, a reclusive old coot who owned houses in all the major tourist spots. California was a perennial tourist destination with eternally beautiful weather, and the uncle had made a fortune from every one of his houses - save one. The cabin by the lake was located in the Sierra Nevada, but as far from Lake Tahoe as you could get. The area was so remote that not even Tammy knew the name of whatever minor lake the cabin bordered, and most renters were terrified of being stranded in the boonies. That's why Tammy's uncle let them use the place for free. They helped keep it clean between the rare occasions when it was actually inhabited.

Every summer the girls roadtripped to the cabin and spent the week sunbathing on the sandy shores and watching terrible VHS tapes from the 1980s. They danced in their underwear, they drank too much wine, they told each other their stupidest secrets.

Ruined. All ruined. First Kim had said that she'd really like to bring her boyfriend this year.
