    CHAPTER ONE

We interrupt our regular program to allow our crime correspondent to tell us about breaking news concerning the Alcet Corporation, the presenter of the popular midday musical show on Slot Network said before the video vision dimmed and then came on showing the all too familiar Montage of the Alcet Corporation’s building. Several armored personnel carriers dotted the front of the building. Coming down from the steps of the building were several gun toting security men from the many security organizations in the country and sandwiched in between them was a dapper middle aged man.

About an hour ago, we got a tip off that the Chief Executive Officer of Alcet Corporation was going to be arrested for impersonation and we rushed down only to meet the scene that is being relayed. The security men would not allow us near Mr. Victor Nusola who looked so unruffled by the antics and heavy handedness of sending such a large security detail to invite a man who had always been in the public eye for interrogation. We got in touch with the Chief Media Officer for the corporation who told us that the security men only claimed that they were interested in clarifying the age that Mr. Nusola is claiming and that the corporation founder and head had assured everyone before leaving with the security men that there was no cause for alarm if there is nothing more than what has been claimed by the security men. We shall be monitoring developments and shall keep viewers posted so we ask you to stay with us. This is Kofo Olanitori for Slot Network.

The camera was gradually being refocused away from the group emerging from the company’s building when a loud noise was heard from the opposite side and the camera man quickly switched to the road to see a large crowd of young men that would easily overwhelm the armed men come running down bearing all forms of improvised ammunitions. The camera switched back to the security men who appeared bemused by the development. Mr. Nusola quickly assessed the situation and said to the leader of the security detail, This calls for my intervention if you will be agreeable so that unnecessary blood will not be shed.

I’ll appreciate if you can do anything to control this situation, the deputy commissioner of police replied.

With this, Mr. Nusola stepped out of the cordon of security men and went towards the menacing group that was about to completely subsume the security men with his hands raised in a gesture that demand peace. My friends, I am not surprised to see you come out in this large number but I am only pleasantly shocked that you have been able to mobilize in such a very short notice. I will like to request that you allow these gentlemen and ladies carry out the biddings of their superiors. I am sure that your desire to see that no hanky-panky takes place is already well demonstrated and understood by the authorities. Since I am a law abiding citizen of this country, I have no reason to fear an invitation from the law enforcement agencies. I am only miffed at this show of unnecessary force and I have and will continue to make that clear. I have absolute confidence that I will soon come back to you all.

A big cheer rose from the midst of the angry mob who were placated by his words and he made his way back to rejoin the security men. I will ride in my car and some of you can join me while some of your vehicles lead and the others follow.

That is alright with me, the D.C.P. replied. I’m sure that my superiors must have seen how you acted to diffuse a potentially dangerous situation that could have dented the image of this nation before the international community.

Mr. Nusola then moved to his Rolls Royce limousine and his driver came to open the door but he was waved away by a youth from the crowd who came to open the door and he entered. The D.C.P. joined him while the other security men scrambled into their vehicles and the convoyed moved slowly away with the crowd forming a sort of guard of honor to allow them passage.

When the convoy arrived at the state police headquarters, the gate was quickly thrown open and the lead vehicles parted way for the limousine to enter first. As the car was parking in front of the main building, several top brasses of the security services including the inspector general of police and the director general of the state security services came out.

This must be more than a routine enquiry into the veracity of my age claims, Mr. Nusola said to the D.C.P. who was about to get out of the car.

Sir, I can only say that I am also surprised as they were not here when we left, the police officer replied.

We shall soon know what they are after.

A police constable opened the car for Mr. Nusola and he emerged. Ibrahim, why have you people come after me like a felon? He asked facing the director general of the state security services.

Good afternoon sir, the director general replied. Shall we go in and everything will be cleared up in a jiffy.

You gentlemen are calling the shots for now, he replied with a shrug as he followed the top security men into the building. They went into the conference room and the security men sat together at one end of the large round table that occupied the centre of the expansive hall.

Please make yourself comfortable sir, the Inspector General of police addressed the businessman as he made no move to join them at the table and indicated the opposite end of the table.

Thank you, he replied and took a seat at the indicated end. He waited as the men continued to gaze at him. I’ve been indulging in this game long before you all came into this world, he mused to himself and he continued to look back at them with no emotion showing on his face.

Sir, we only want to get some information from you, the director general of the state security services stated at last. I hope you will accept our thanks for stopping the mob from attacking our men in your premises.

My pleasure to be of service, he replied. That is all you gentlemen will get out of me until my lawyers get here and I am sure that you all know that I am entitled to legal representation.

We don’t need to stand on formality since all of us on this side of the table are all well known to you and have related cordially with you in the past. The Inspector General said but the man he was addressing only continued to stare at him without reply and he continued. We have been requested to meet with you to clarify some issues and will appreciate if you will give us the required information so that you can go and attend to your busy schedule. Still he got no response and he looked at the director general of the state security services.

I am sure that the officer that led the contingent to your office told you that we are interested in ascertaining your true age as there have been some enquiries from your international partners and other agencies, the director general said but he too was unable to get a response from their implacable guest.

I don’t think we will make any headway with Mr. Nusola for now, gentlemen, the head of military intelligence said. We all need to realize that he is been used to confrontations at business meetings for far longer than any of us. We can only hope that his lawyers will be here soon. I think we should be thinking of how to make his wait more comfortable. He then turned to the businessman and asked, Sir, is there anything we can get you while we wait for your solicitors?

No, thanks, was the curt response he got and he smiled and stood up.

I think that our guest will like some privacy to make some calls, he addressed his fellow security men and they followed his example by standing up and they all filed out silently without addressing any other word to their uncooperative guest.

The lone man remaining in the expansive room waited for some minutes absolutely still before turning round to see if he truly was alone. He then brought out his mobile phone and switched on a powerful app that will scan the environment for any possible monitoring of signal leaving his phone. Once he was satisfied that there was no interference, he placed a call to his personal assistant.

Hello sir, came the ever cheerful voice of Tolu, his ever imperturbable aide.

How is the office? he asked. Has someone gone to tell my wife not to fret herself?

She is here with me sir, she replied.

Well then, let me speak with her.

Hello dear, what do they want with you? his wife Omolade asked with an anxiety laden voice.

It’s your prediction come true, he replied with a reassuring laugh.

Is that why they had to come for you firing all their guns?

That is all they have asked so far but I have given them no answer. I am waiting for Moses to arrive with his team. I suspect that this regime is looking for an excuse to settle scores with me for not endorsing them during the last elections.

You are going to wait a little longer because the team is delayed here, she informed him.

What is holding them? he asked.

You people left before a larger and more unruly crowd of your admirers arrived and they are holding up all traffic claiming that they are going to shut down the nation until you are released to address them, she informed him. All efforts to get them to allow the lawyers through have so far failed.

Have you addressed them yourself? he asked. I’m sure that you are well known to them and they will listen to you as they will listen to me.

Do you think that I should go and talk to them? she asked hesitantly.

Yes, I want you to go with the lawyers to the mezzanine and use the public address system to speak with the crowd, he replied. I’m sure they will give you a very cordial reception. Let me speak with Tolu.

Hope you are alright sir, Tolu asked once she came on line.

I’m fine so far, he replied. Get Niyi to go with my wife so that she can address the crowd to allow the lawyers through.

I doubt if they will be able to get far if they leave here because the reports we are getting is that virtually the whole city is boiling, she replied. The only guarantee is if she is with them. I’m sure that she will be allowed through as she is well known and loved by the populace.

I will then be expecting her with them ASAP, he replied and cut off the phone before she could add any other thing.

He got up from his chair and paced round the room as events in his long and eventful life
