The fear in her eyes was heartbreaking. As I took the woman into the police interview room, she sobbed uncontrollably.

‘Can I take a statement?’ I said softly.

Sadly this wasn’t the first, or the last, domestic violence call I’d attend during my years as police officer.

‘If I say anything he’ll kill me,’ she wept.

As she walked out without making a statement or applying for an AVO – an Apprehended Violence Order – I felt helpless.
