The Story Behind This Book
Mary was infected with HIV at a very young age. She takes the reader through her life’s story as she narrates her ordeals from childhood through her puberty and adolescent stages. Her story will help many who are still facing acceptance issues from HIV infections.
Although, Mary had faced many challenges when she was still innocent and ignorant, it was hard and confusing to contemplate what was happening in her life. She got the virus while still a baby. When she was born, there was no awareness or knowledge on HIV, its prevention, and transmission from the mother to child. Two years after her birth, Mary’s parents left her and her older siblings as orphans.
At the age of two, the Mary’s life revolved around medication. Even though she was still young to understand her state, Mary managed to live with the virus and later joined pre-school, the community’s primary school, and finally went to high school. Life was not smooth for her, as many times she would analyze her condition, asking herself and God many questions. Sometimes, she shed tears, especially when people from her village spoke unpleasant things about her and her parents. Those who knew her HIV status would sometimes talk arrogantly to her to the extent of telling her that she will soon join her parents to the grave.
From a little girl to a young adult, Mary struggled to survive all challenges facing her. She later came to learn more about HIV, its spread, and medication. In acquiring new knowledge on HIV, Mary started viewing HIV differently as opposed to what she grew up knowing. Even though many a times she was discriminated against her classmates, friends and some relatives, she did not give up. It was from a HIV support program that she gained strength and courage to face the society and prove to everyone that HIV does not change people. Instead, life must go on – with the required medication.
In 2010, Mary was introduced to the use of ARTs, and she immediately started her treatment. The treatment on ARTs has given her a full
