Inheriting MISFORTUNE

BUSINESS owner Channan Warmington Lewis Moore, 19, was just six months old in 2000 when she was diagnosed with HIV, caused by prenatal neglect from her biological mother who was a drug addict.

“Both of my parents were drug addicts,” she says. “When my mom was pregnant with me she refused any prenatal care. That’s how I contracted HIV from her. I was with my biological parents for six months after being born before I was taken away from them due to neglect.”

Channan wasn’t growing or eating, and had to spend the next six months of her life in hospital where, having diagnosed her with HIV, doctors feared she wouldn’t live long, or could be disabled. She
