    Aids Prevention and Christian Teaching

    PREFACE

AIDS is a disease spreading very fast all over the world. It may affect any person or a child whose mother is HIV positive. By the mid 1990s over a third of a million Americans died of AIDS. But the centre for disease control and prevention (CDC) had revised their estimate of living person with HIV/AIDS downward from about a million to a more conservative estimate of 650,000 people.1

Till to date there is no total cure for AIDS. The available drugs can only prolong the life By the end of 1997 the United Nations revised their estimate of persons with HIV upwards to 30.6 million.2

‘Prevention is better than cure’ is a saying but in the case of AIDS there is no cure only prevention is the possibility. If a person lives with only one sexual partner throughout his life the chance of getting HIV is negligible.

The Ten Commandments in the Bible and teachings of Jesus also advise to have only one sexual partner i.e. one husband or wife. So the Christian teachings can be very helpful and can be used in the prevention of AIDS. The abridged version is published in Religion and Society, Magazine March 1998 issue. The editor has given permission to publish the full version some where else.
