The author of this book has the honour to write the first book on herbal beauty care published in India in 1982. Parvesh Handa is a famous cosmetologist. She is an internationally known figure in the field of indigenous cosmetics made with herbs and roots. She is a regular contributor to 'beauty columns' in many reputed magazines and national newspapers. She is author of about 10 books on the various women subjects including three Encyclopaedias on beauty culture and health. She was Editor of a lifestyle magazine published from New Delhi for several years and was associated with national English dailies as News/Feature Correspondent for years. She worked with reputed cosmetics manufacturing companies as their Product Development Manager and Senior Consultant for several years and is presently running her own cosmetics manufacturing unit in the country. She has to her credit the first books on herbal beauty and modelling published in India.

1. FACIAL
Do you have a sof, smooth, clear, attractive and glowing skin? If so, you are blessed. But, mind you, the beauty of your skin will not last for ever. With advancing age, there is no guarantee that you will continue to have that fresh youthful look; you will have to exert to keep it as it is. Normally, worries and tensions, coupled with climatic effect, tell upon the skin and many women look aged even in their prime. There are three types of facial skin which are: normal skin, dry, and oily skin.
However, there is also a special skin type which is very common these days. It is called Combination Skin. In this skin type the region that covers the forehead, nose and chiw has oily skin. This area is commonly called the ‘T’ zone. The rest of the face has norma to dry skin.
Normal Skin: This type of skin is one of the best types which retains freshness, atraction and fush for long. It requires very light make-up. Face should be washed with soft water. If normal tap water in your area is hard, sofen it by adding a little ‘borax powder’ to it. In order to retain the glow of your skin, it is imperative to wipe of your make-up before going to bed with a good cleansing cream. Do not use makeup at least once a week so as to let your skin breathe fresh air.
Dry Skin: This type of skin is sensitive to the weather and is prone to wrinkles. Protect it against the wind, Sun and water. Dry skin should not be washed with cold water and facewash, nor should astringent lotions be used. Instead, After cleaning it every night, before bed-time, it is best to use a good moisturizer which can give some freshness to the skin. It should be non-alcoholic, because alcohol dries the skin. The moisturizer should be spread slowly on the face to in an outward motion either with cotton or fingers. Apply the moisturizer on your neck and other parts which are exposed. Diet, which rich in vitamins A, B, C, D should be consumed.
Oily or Greasy Skin: This type of skin is prone to pimples and dark spots. It therefore, requires frequent cleaning, at least thrice a day. Use of sulphur soap is helpful, also, cleaning your face at night with some good quality cleansing milk or with unboiled milk is a good remedy. Avoid greasy food. Your intake of water should be at least six glasses a day. If your skin is allowed to remain greasy, pimples and blackheads appear. A greasy skin does not require make-up. Steaming once a week is an effective method to keep the skin fawless. Use a face-pack After steaming. Face-packs are available in the market but they can also be made at home. The kind of face-pack which would best suit your skin depends on your skin type.
Skin Care in Summer
Your skin requires during utmost attention summer, as sweating makes your skin sticky. It requires frequent cleaning. Due to exposure to the Sun and hot winds, the skin becomes carped and complexion shallow. Moreover, the pores get clogged due to perspiration and the skin is unable to breathe.
If you have a greasy skin, steaming once a week is advisable, if you have a dry skin steam it once a fortnight. For steaming, a special electrical gadget is used. But if you are doing it at home, the procedure is simple — boil water in a pot and place your face on it from a distance so that the rising steam touches your face. Spread a towel on your head to prevent the steam from escaping. 4-5 minutes of steaming is sufficient. After this, sprinkle your face with ice-cold water so as to close the open pores. Regular steaming keeps the skin glowing.
Quick hints to help protect your skin during summer:
Use facewash at least once in a day.
Clean your face and neck with a good cleansing-milk.
Use a good astringent for oily skin.
After cleaning your face, take an ice cube and massage it all over your face in slow motion.
Wash your face with cold water at least thrice a day.
A light massage, with a night cream, before going to bed is useful, but the quantity of cream should be small because in summer you don’t want to be all greasy.
Skin Care in Winter
The icy winter winds greatly damage your skin and with it comes skin chapping which is a common problem. But, the skin type which is most vulnerable to cold is dry skin which cracks easily if remains uncared for. Many-a-time cracked skin bleeds too. It is, therefore, necessary to avoid long exposures. Also you have to take care of the other exposed parts of your body such as palms, feet, back and neck, etc. Icy winds also dull the complexion of your skin. If the skin is dry, then minimise the use of soap and use a good facewash. Cold cream and olive oil are effective in reducing dryness. But, it is essential to deep-cleanse your face. For deep-cleansing, take a cotton swab, dip it in water and squeeze it. Apply cleansing–milk and gently rub it on your face and neck. Do not use unheated milk as it can lead to opening up of pores on the face. Tomato and raspberry juice best suited for facial cleaning. At night, do not use water After cleansing, instead use a wet towel for wiping. The towel should be dipped in hot water and then squeezed. After this, a facial massage with a skin-tonic mixed with almond oil is beneficial. Massage the skin for at least 10 minutes so as to enable the cream to penetrate the
