Chapter One
The Visitors
Siicanndaai glanced at the Leader.
The Leader nodded.
They watched as a small, naked, dark brown child toddled towards the fire the adults kept going in the middle of their encampment. An adult female rushed after it snatching it up before it could burn itself. She was nearly as naked as the tiny male, wearing only a rough made garment covering her from waist to mid-thigh. Her prominent breasts were bare.
The female held the little one in her arms, speaking and shaking her head. Siicanndaai gathered she was giving a warning to the child not to go near the fire, though the monitoring device on which they were watching the group had the sound turned down and Siicanndaai could not hear her. It could have read her thoughts but chose not to as it considered that to be an invasion of privacy. Still scolding, the female carried the child toward a tent-like structure made of woven grasses.
Siicanndaai sighed as it gazed at the child. It did not have children and feared it was doomed to remain forever childless. Unable to acquire any potential group-mates to date, it knew it probably never would.
Over the next several days, the Leader noticed how Siicanndaai watched the children of the primitive group with longing, and its hearts ached for it. It knew how much the young Elvwist wanted group-mates and children of its own but knew that was a future that likely would never occur.
Siicanndaai was born with a singular birth defect that none of the Healers could correct. It did not have the striking, feathery, foot high crest that all others of the Elvwist possessed. Instead, layers of multicolored, iridescent feathers covered its head. They lay flat no matter how hard it tried to get them to stand. It also had feathers on both its arms that ran underneath them and down its sides so that when it stretched it arms to the sides, they unfolded, resembling wings.
The Healers said the lack of a crest was a throwback to when their species was mostly aquatic and swam to catch fish. So were the arm feathers. They were less of a problem though the condition was rare.
People were always polite enough to pretend not to notice its lack but without fail, even when it met someone with whom it might wish to simply be friends, there would be an awkward pause, then, the person would make some type of excuse for continuing on its way and Siicanndaai would not see it again.
No one had ever asked Siicanndaai home to meet their parents and siblings. Even when it was a child, it was not successful at acquiring any lasting friends, and after a while, it ceased trying. Although it knew its parents and siblings loved it, they had their own lives and it felt a deep void. It had ceased to hope for a mate-group and children.
It was, perhaps, the loneliest Elvwist in the universe.
The Leader had another world it needed to check in a nearby star system, so it made a decision.
< Siicanndaai, there is another world to visit before we return home. We must leave this one, as it is not suitable for colonization.>
Siicanndaai nodded.
At the time of their visit to that particular planet, it was centuries after their Great War and a little over three hundred years after they went back out into space. They had established colonies on other worlds in hopes of improving fertility rates amongst their people. Having such colonies had only been marginally successful but they had decided to colonize one more, which was the reason they had traveled to that planet.
Siicanndaai knew that they could not remain and would have to seek another since the world contained the primitive race of hunter/gathers. For that type of society, the people were very fertile, indeed.
The Leader had a happy surprise for the young Elvwist.
The Leader waited for its answer.
Siicanndaai’s large blue eyes widened in surprise - and eagerness.
It was only nineteen years old, but as all advance scouts it possessed several required psychic abilities in addition to telepathy: Healing, levitation, telekinesis, psychic location, and memory wiping. It also had several other, non-required ones. It was quite a talented youngster. It was unfortunate it was born with its particular birth defects for it was otherwise a handsome being. The Leader thought the head and arm feathers were quite attractive.
It sighed. It briefly entertained the thought that had it been younger and not already vow-mated with three group-mates it truly loved, it might have considered Siicanndaai for a mate. Then, it shook its head ruefully. It was an honest Elvwist and it knew that, as a matter of practicality, it could not have had the young Elvwist as a group-mate. Not if it wished to procreate. In such an instance, it would not have been able to acquire any other mates, as no other Elvwist would ever have accepted one such as Siicanndaai into a mate-group. Still, it was quite beautiful.
The Leader understood the reluctance, though it did not agree. The head crest was a definitive Elvwist feature, and as far as it knew, no other Elvwist had been born without one since their species evolved it. No one deliberately tried to make Siicanndaai feel bad about its lack. It was just that no one wanted to mate with it for fear of begetting crestless children.
Nearly all Elvwist had established associations that led to forming mate-groups by its age, but sadly, most people would not befriend Siicanndaai. Even when it visited a luanna house to mate with the surrogates, it detected reluctance on their part, though the law required them to provide service to everyone.
The surrogates were polite, even friendly, but there were always excuses for not accommodating it. The few times they did, it was only for a half-mating so Siicanndaai had never received sperm, and suspected its sperm was sealed off and rejected. This, too, was against the law except in cases of illness, but very hard to prove.
The prior year, before the start of their current trip, Siicanndaai had tried a final time. It went into the luanna house at the spaceport. It left in despair when other single Elvwist came in, and while it still waited, they received service from the surrogates. When it questioned this, it was told the others had appointments.
Siicanndaai knew better, of course. Appointments were unnecessary at the luanna houses and it had the right to report this.
Siicanndaai was unaware that the Leader saw it changing colors in distress as it left the luanna house. It did not allow the young Elvwist to know it saw its angst as it knew how shy and self-conscious it was, and did not wish to embarrass it, but it went inside and made inquiries. It was told the surrogates were busy
while Siicanndaai was there. It had no way of proving the surrogates were being deceptive and knew Siicanndaai did not report them. It also knew Siicanndaai had never returned to the luanna house.
The Leader hoped it was making the right decision by leaving Siicanndaai alone but knew it wanted a chance to prove itself, that it thought perhaps someone would then feel it worthy of having as a mate. The Leader knew this was a forlorn hope but saw no harm in indulging it in this matter, and felt it would do a good job.
They left everything Siicanndaai required to carry out its study, along with its food supplies, in the cave from which they had been observing the primitive group, wished it well, sang a departing song, and lifted off from the planet.

A Brief Explanation of How We Arrived at this Point
(An excerpt of the lecture given to impending predults by historian and biologist, Samiilaa, and recorded in the Elvwist archives in the 1459th year of the New Era)
We evolved from a small semi-aquatic, avian-like, egg-laying life form that was gender-neutral, having aspects of both male and female. The biology dictated four to procreate.
Before higher intelligence developed, telepathy arose within our species naturally as a defense against predators while we were still swimmers in inhospitable ponds. The proto-Elvwist laid their eggs in water a few days after fertilization, and a week later, the eggs hatched into their larval
