About this ebook

Jade is fourteen years old and excited about finally being old enough to move out on her own. She’s got her help lined up, a moving van rented which her friend and room-mate, Tally, a big silver Cat, will be driving since Jade’s driving skills leave a lot to be desired. She’s all packed and ready to go.
Apparently, though, you just can’t have a moving day without something going wrong. Go figure.

    Chapter 1

I’m excited. So is Tally, though he’ll never admit it. This is it, I think. Today I become independent!

I lie across my bed on the bare mattress staring up at the ceiling, my mind going over everything that led up to this day. I flip over and gaze at the pile of boxes sitting near the door. I spent hours packing them last night after work, only finishing up earlier this morning after breakfast.

My long, beaded, cornrowed braids fall over the edge of the bed, clicking against the hardwood floor, annoying the crap out of me. I’m seriously thinking of chopping all that hair off. I get it caught in something one more time and it’s gone. As soon as I can think of a new style.

Anyway, everything I own is in those boxes, all packed and ready to go. I swing around and sit up, pulling my tatty gray tee down as I shake my baggy beige pants over my legs. Best way to hide the skinny things.

I look around my soon-to-be-vacant bedroom, taking in the bare walls, the curtainless window, and the empty corner where Tally’s bed usually sits. Tally is sitting there on the bare floor staring back at me. His golden eyes glint in the morning sun coming through the open window.

I lean toward him. Tally, you ready to go?

Tally blinks solemnly up at me. he sends. As usual, he uses mind-speak to communicate. He can vocalize, he just doesn’t like to. A breeze from the window stirs his silver fur as he shifts to his feet. I know he really is excited about moving out but he’s determined not to allow me to see it.
