Dr. Farkas: Part I
Blurb
Abigail Andrews is a phlebotomist who has terminal leukemia. The good news is that her oncologist, Dr. Jakob Farkas, might be able to heal her, since he claims to be a vampire. But there's one small hitch, tired of his lonely existence, Farkas has not fed in over 100 years and needs to be brought back to health before he can help Abigail, with whom he has fallen in love.
Abigail doesn't believe the crazy doctor's story, but she doesn't have much else going on at the moment besides dying. So she leaves her boring life behind in order to join Dr. Jakob Farkas on his travels around the world in search of a mystical cure.
As they await the arrival of the Spring Equinox in the legendary caves in Lascaux France, Abigail wonders if she can overcome the greatest obstacle to her cure: her mortality.

Come here, whore,
the man's cruel voice rent the quiet summer night. He remained concealed in the alley's shadows as he quickly pulled the woman by the hand. Her heel wobbled before skidding on a shiny candy wrapper.
She wore the uniform of a cheap streetwalker advertising her profession: neon pink fishnet hose, liquid black spiked heels so high she teetered with every step, a plunging blue satin blouse with no bra beneath, revealing the contours of shriveled flesh. The prostitute smelled of cheap perfume and sex. A legion of men layered her skin, their sweat and effluence a permanent stain of disappointment and a reminder of broken dreams.
Here?
the woman asked, having to look up in the tall john's face, even with her stilettos on.
Shut up and just do your job, whore,
the young man grumbled.
Burying his hands in the redhead's greasy hair, he pressed her down to her knees. A tiny shard of broken glass sliced her kneecap. Blood pooled out, wetting the ground as she squirmed beneath the pressure.
C'mon, whore. I don't got all night!
I smelled beer and whiskey on the john's breath and bristled at his hatred of all women, of his disdain for this woman in particular. I kept my mouth shut, watched, and waited.
Using her blackened fingernails, the woman unzipped the stranger's jeans.
And don't bite me, either!
the john slurred.
I won't, Danny. Don't worry.
As the prostitute catered to his desires, he leaned back, his sweaty body flattening his overcoat against the spray-painted bricks.
I drooled as I watched the familiar scene unfold. I couldn't stop thinking about that precious blood going to waste, seeping into the ground beneath the woman's knee. I kept myself hidden in the shadows, watching the scene play out, feeling my anger grow. I growled, the sound rattling deep in my chest, as the rage inside rose.
C'mon, whore. Do it!
He pushed her face deeper into his crotch.
My stomach churned at the sight of the sadistic john's unnecessary cruelty. I wondered if every baby vamp went through this stage, raging at the sight of all of humanity's petty injustices, and if they saw themselves as immortal slayers of wrongdoers. Unfortunately, I didn't have a chance to discuss my feelings with too many other vampires. The few I had met were all Jakob's (my wonderful maker's) friends and they were all older than Hungary itself. They were the solitary type, choosing to hang out with their changelings instead of mingling with the new blood.
As I quickly learned soon after Jakob turned me, the phrase one big happy family didn't exist in vampire culture.
But none of that mattered as I waited for my opportunity, relishing the growing indignation right down to the very ichor flowing in my bones. I cracked my neck in anticipation of a quick takedown.
I waited a few more minutes, watching the lurid scene play out. I finally had enough. Fangs painfully extended, I tensed, ready to spring, preparing to leap the thirty-foot gap to the john. Suddenly, a pale hand with tapered fingers reached out from the darkness and touched my forearm.
What?
The word came out as a growl. I faced Jakob, his expression as dark as his long hair, as black as the night, as stern as a father's about to inflict some discipline.
Of course, Jakob didn't immediately reply. Not that he had to, since we could read each other's minds, now that we were coupled, but he had the ability to veil his thoughts, and when I probed his mind, as I tried to do now, I met a darkness so complete, so deep, I feared drowning in it. I guess I still had stuff to learn, after all.
Wait, Abigail.
Jakob had the patience of a saint, especially when the meal came with a sexy show.
Danny-the-john grunted and drove his groin harder into the woman's mascara-streaked face. She opened her mouth and gulped for breath. When she tried to pull away, he pressed her head forward.
The bastard.
She gurgled and issued a muffled cry.
Oh, did I have a special treat for this guy, if only Jakob would release his hold on me. I'd felt, over the last three
