    Chapter 1: Introduction

    Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr. or Muhammad Ali is considered as one of the all time best heavyweight boxers in the world. He set unbelievable records during his glorious boxing career. Not only this but also his journey to the top is just like a fairy tale. Ali was born in a Black Christian family on 17th of January, in 1942, in Louisville, Kentucky, USA. He was named Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr. by his parents.

    Muhammad Ali won the World Heavyweight Championship title three times. There is no doubt that Ali is widely considered one of the greatest heavyweight championship boxers of all time.

    Though he was brought up in poverty, with the time he learned to live with the circumstances and never missed an opportunity which could give even a glimpse of hope. As an amateur boxer, Ali won a gold medal in 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome. This big event gave him immense amount of encouragement and he started practicing for the higher goals. His hard work and rigorous practice enabled him to turn professional. During his professional boxing career, Ali succeeded to become the first boxer in the world to win the lineal heavyweight championship thrice. No one has been able to break this record set by this great boxer.

    Cassius Marcellus Clay was highly influenced by the teachings of Islam and he got inspired by the Islamic teachings and changed his name. He joined the Nation of Islam in 1964 and converted to Sunni Islam in 1975. Recently he is said to have been converted to Sufism.

    When he began to be called by the name Muhammad Ali, people from the Islamic countries showered their praise and blessings upon him. He became a very popular figure in those countries.

    Muhammad Ali sternly opposed the Vietnam War, and owing to his recently adopted religious beliefs, he refused to be inducted into the U. S. Army. It was the law that every adult male had to be inducted into the army at that time. Muhammad Ali was arrested and draft evasion charges proved him guilty. He was stripped of his boxing title, and his boxing license was also suspended. Ali did not resist, instead, he gained more popularity and a large number of sympathizers stood by him. Ali was not sent to prison be he was not allowed to fight for the following four years. He appealed in the U. S. Supreme Court and his appeal brought positive results.

    Muhammad Ali is often called Ali The Greatest. He participated in a number of historic boxing bouts. During his fights people remained glued to their radio
