    Chapter 1

Jenna was happy, when she made the short trip across the English Channel. It was something she often did. But this time it was special.

Jenna, a young thirty year old art teacher from Chatham, often frequented in Calais. This town is a large frontier town in Northern France that joined UK and France together.

After work had finished on a Friday, Jenna would excitedly get up early the next morning. Then she would get a train from Chatham station to Dover Priory. After an hour on the train, she would catch the port bus, and then the next boat out to Calais. This time though, she would be leaving straight after work.

She had been making the trip between the two frontier towns almost every weekend. She started to make friends in the town. One of her friends was an expat, called Jane. She had often invited her to stay; Jenna though always gave an excuse why she couldn’t.

This weekend was a bank holiday weekend. It was going to be different. This time she was going to take Jane up on her offer and stay.

How they met was by chance. Jenna was shopping in the town, looking for French products, and then on her way back to the port, she decided on having a beer.

There she met Jane. She told her that she lives in the town with her partner Frodo. Frodo was a DJ at the local nightclub.

‘You must come and hear him, we will have fun.’ Jane said.

Jenna wasn’t so sure. Jenna took Jane’s details, and remained in touch. Their friendship had begun to grow. Jenna was excited about spending the bank holiday with her new friend.

She rarely imposed herself on them; she didn’t like taking advantage of people. Yet the bank holiday Jenna decided that she would stay with them. Jane was happy. It had been a while since she had fun with a fellow patriot.

Jane had been in France for four years. She enjoyed the French life. But without work, was difficult. She had recently lost her job in the local pub, she was dependant on Frodo. Frodo didn’t mind, he loved Jane. She loved him.

Jenna though was now at the port of Dover waiting for her boat to Calais. Jenna was a single woman; she enjoyed the freedom of doing what she liked.

She loved the French way of life. The French food and culture was so different from that of British life.

They had wine, and we had beer. They had fricadelle and frites, and we had fish and chips. The language, and the way the French spoke, fascinated her.

Jane had often spoken about her time in the UK. She also raved about the French life. She had no regrets in leaving the UK. She enjoyed her life in France.

Jenna, now boarding the boat to France, found her seat in the usual place, at the front of the ship, looking out at sea.

This was her favourite place. She enjoyed looking out at sea. It had a calming influence. It allowed her to take her mind of the UK, and her job.

She found her job rather difficult to support. The students didn’t show her any respect. In fact she hated being head of department. Going to France was a form of escapism, a way to forget about the horrors of class teaching, and managing staff.

Soon, she was halfway across the Channel. This made her even more
