The Spiritualist Diary - Kristina Howells
Preface
Jane a middle aged woman in her late forties, with very neat graying hair tied up in a bun was sitting in the conservatory of her rather large house, drinking from a pot, a cup of earl grey tea. It was there that her mind began to drift back to the days and months prior to meeting her husband Duncan. Remembering the struggles she had to deal with wasn’t easy for her. Ridden with debt problems from her previous partner called Jake, whom she had never married, clouded a nasty veil over her. It was something she wished she could have left behind some twenty years ago.
*****
Jane an actress, met Jake after a performance she gave of the Twelfth Night, in which she played Viola. He was watching her from a far, as she played the ship wrecked female, who portrayed herself as a man, before meeting and falling in love with her Duke. Like Viola her character, Jane had always wished this would come true for her.
After the performance, Jake, a middle-aged man waited for her by the stage door of the Playhouse Theatre. Seeing her come through the door into the outside world consumed with radiance, and beauty only furthered his attempts at pursuing her.
Hello, my name is Jake.
He smiled, wanting to kiss her hand.
Hello,
she replied. Nice to meet you I’m Jane.
I know may I take you out for a drink.
I’m afraid it’s not possible now. I’ve got a very busy schedule.
She said rather hurriedly.
Then she walked away, leaving Jake standing all alone planning his next course of action. Jake a rather plump in nature, middle aged man, didn’t take no for an answer lightly. He continued to pursue her after every performance the play ran on for. That was until Jane finally gave into the charms of the dashing director of a manufacturing company. He wasn’t the type of man Jane was interested in. She preferred tall men, with a slim frame and who are very elegant. Jake was far from this.
However, as the weeks and months wore on, she became rather stupidly in love with him. It was the kind of love that was like a disease, eating you alive like a parasite does from within. Rather foolishly, not taking heed of the warnings given to her by many associates including his, only further fueled her desire of true love, which was only ever reciprocated once during their eighteen months of being together.
This caused her much distress, as she began to lose support from friends, and work had started to dry up. It was this that caused her to sought help from a spiritualist, before she found herself even further in trouble, both financially and emotionally.
Plucking up the courage, she made her way into a spiritualist church close to where she lived. There she found solace from a woman called Mary, who with piercing eyes could see the desperation in Jane. Dressed in black, and in her late forties, Mary spoke very softly and gently to the lost soul.
If I am going to help you, I need to get you to help yourself in this troublesome world, especially from what I am going to give you each week. I would like you to start keeping a detailed diary. With it, I shall give you my word of wisdom and forecasts for each day. But I must ask you to write down everything in return.
Mary said rather sternly.
Thank you,
Jane replied. I will.
The next day Jane went to buy a black leather diary, large enough to record the events that would lead to her salvation, which was to take her away from Jake once and for all. And to allow her to live her life once more, away from his wrath that he had stowed upon her, during the eighteen months she had known him.
*****
Now having finished her cup of earl grey tea, Jane quickly put the empty tea pot and cup into the kitchen, and went upstairs to the bedroom to find the diary, which she kept hidden in a black box on her side of the wardrobe. Duncan her lawyer husband never once quizzed what was in the black box.
Maybe now is the right time to show him.
She thought as she reached for it, high above her head on the top shelf. I shall show and tell him all about it after dinner.
Putting the box on the dining room table, she eagerly awaited for his arrival from a hard day’s work in the office.
Hello darling.
He gleamed, as he walked through the door straight to his beloved Jane.
Hello Duncan, please sit down. Dinner is almost ready, and I have cooked your favorite spaghetti Bolognese.
Duncan a man in his late forties, with dark graying hair always appreciated his wife’s cooking, and company at the end of a hard day. He was working on a lot of cases, and sometimes just being in Jane’s company helped him to forget these.
Over dinner, Duncan spoke of his day. Jane enjoyed hearing him talk about the cases he was working on. She could see that he liked to tell her all about his day at work, and this made her feel a part of his life, despite not being able to have any children to share their lives with of their own. This didn’t seem to matter as they both had each other.
It was then; Jane bought up the subject of the black box and the contents inside it, particularly hinting to the diary. Duncan was amazed. He’d never thought Jane would share with him the contents that had been hidden for nearly twenty years in the black box.
What you will read my dear Duncan,
Jane said rather nervously. Well it will give you a better understanding of me as a person. Some of it may seem difficult. But I feel as we aren’t getting any younger, and our marriage is as strong and secure as it has ever been. I now want you to read it.
Duncan taken aback, took hold of the book into his right hand, and placed it onto the table.
I’ll look at if after I have helped you with the washing up and put the dishes away.
He replied with a smile.
Quickly finishing the arduous task of cleaning up, Jane went into the lounge to watch television. Duncan followed closely behind, grabbing the black book en route. There sitting opposite his lovely wife on the cream leather two seat sofa, he began to read it.
