When and where were you born?
I was born in Dundee, Scotland in 1931, the second of three boys. We lived in a rental house. My father grew up in tenements and the local people didn’t think much of people who lived in tenements.
What was he like?
He was a caring man, but he wasn’t good socially. He was always changing jobs and we had to move 14 times, so my education was a mess. Every time I’d get a responsible teacher who said, “Hey son, we’ll sort you out because you’re a bit behind,” we’d move again. It was dreadful. I wanted to be academic but I had
