    Chapter One

Hello, can I speak to Kay Butler, please.

Is that Mr Baker, Father of Veronica?

    Yes that's right.

She's in my class at school. Do you know what she did to the teacher today? She....

Um, I don't think I want to know, thank you. Could I speak to your sister, please?

    Hold on!

Gary Baker held on while Jimmy Butler ran upstairs.

It's Mr Baker, I think he wants you to baby-sit for Veronica.

A cold feeling came over Kay Butler. Memories of last Saturday came back to her. She looked at her brother. No. N-O, no.

    What shall I tell him?

Er, tell him I've turned into a goldfish.

    Mr Baker?

    Yes?

My sister has turned into a goldfish.

    A what?

    A goldfish.

Oh. Does that mean she won't able to baby-sit tomorrow evening?

I think it does, said Jimmy Baker.

    Okay, thanks very much.

    You're welcome.

Gary Baker turned to his wife. She looked at him optimistically. He shook his head. She's turned into a goldfish.

How many have you tried? asked Susan Baker.

Three so far, replied Gary. Carol has got too much homework, Elizabeth is going to wash her cat...

    Elizabeth? You mean Liz Carter?

    Gary Baker nodded.

But the Carters haven't got a cat!

I'm sure she'll find one before tomorrow evening, said Gary. And Kay has turned into a goldfish!

But we've got to find a baby-sitter. The tickets for the show cost us more than sixty pounds each. There must be someone.
