About this ebook
In ancient China, the place of women in the Chinese society was not commendable, for they were compelled to spend their lives under the dominance of the males. There was no gender equality before the Cultural Revolution in China.
China went through a long civil war on mainland. After the civil war, Mao Zedong with his revolutionary army defeated the Koumintang government under General Chiang Kal Shek.
After the victory of the revolutionary army, a communist government was formed in Beijing on 1st of October, 1949, under the leadership of Chairman Mao Zedong. As a result The People’s Republic of China emerged.

Chapter One: Introduction
A traditionally dressed Chinese woman
In ancient China, the place of women in the Chinese society was not commendable, for they were compelled to spend their lives under the dominance of the males. There was no gender equality before the Cultural Revolution in China.
China went through a long civil war on mainland. After the civil war, Mao Zedong with his revolutionary army defeated the Koumintang government under General Chiang Kal Shek.
After the victory of the revolutionary army, a communist government was formed in Beijing on 1st of October, 1949, under the leadership of Chairman Mao Zedong. As a result The People’s Republic of China emerged.
The new government was committed to implementing cultural, social, economic, and political gender equality. Several reforms were made in China after the Cultural Revolution. These changes obviously affected women’s status in China.
After the establishment of The People’s Republic of China, there were only seven percent working women in China, but by 1992 the percentage of working women in China miraculously went up to 38 percent.
