About this ebook

We reached Raman’s house very early the following morning. The head of the South Indian family was shocked to see us there so early in the morning. However, he said, “Very good, so you have come. I have already arranged another house for me to stay in. I will get the key to the other house tomorrow. You will get your house back tomorrow evening. Please come in and have some tea.”

We had nothing to say because he had made everything so clear. We stepped inside.

Raman was deeply perturbed to see the condition of his house. The tenant had almost damaged the interior. We were shocked. It was so neat and clean when Raman lived there but now it was worse than a storehouse. Cobwebs were hanging from the ceiling and walls, torn papers were scattered all over the floor, old torn shoes and slippers were adorning one corner of the drawing room, and old furniture was spread all over the house. It seemed as if it had not been cleaned for five years. There was a kind of stink inside the house, as if several dead mice had been left around to stink.

    Chapter One

Those who go abroad often leave their houses under the care of their relatives or tenants, thinking that they would come back after a few years and take possession of their houses.

In past few years, many of the old houses in the neighbourhood had been totally transformed. The owners had spent a few years in foreign countries and when they came back they were loaded with dollars and pounds. The very first thing they did was to demolish their old houses and have new luxurious bungalows constructed. They bought some additional land around their houses and built their small gardens as well.

Old Bombay has already become Mumbai, and the fishermen’s island is the financial capital of the country now. Multistory buildings can be seen everywhere and the land in Mumbai is the most expensive in the world.

Raman has a small old house at Linking road. There is a small garden in front of it.

Before going to London to work there and probably settle there he had given that house to a South Indian family on rent. He spent five years in London, and it is said that he has earned millions there and has bought his own house in Glasgow. He owns his own
