    Chapter One: Cab Driver

    Life of a cab driver in New York City is not as easy as it appears to be. With his expectant eyes, he keeps on looking at the people standing at the roadsides while he happens to be on the go, otherwise staying in a parking lot he waits for a call. He earns enough to live comfortably, but sometimes there are problems with the customers, machine, and cops. He gets irritated when his passengers occupy the backseat and suddenly he finds that the cab won’t start. Besides losing the fare he has to waste his precious time and money to have that car repaired.

    Night shift drivers feel a bit easier because traffic does not happen to be as dense as it is during the day. Most of the night passengers often hire cabs on phone. A large majority of them go to airports, bus terminals, or railway station. Sometimes, late night party-goers become a cab driver’s passengers. They happen to be rash and callous, but they pay well, often with a fat tip.

    Being summoned at night by passengers is not something unusual. Usually, a cab driver waits outside the house the address of which is provided to him on phone. He patiently waits for his passenger or passengers to come out.

    Mike, our cab driver, the hero of this story, is not like other cab drivers. He is quite different in everything. He does not follow any restrictions. Having been summoned to a particular address, instead of waiting for the passenger in front of the house, he generally knocks on the door or rings the bell.

    He does not feel afraid to take initiative. After all he is dealing with human beings and not aliens. He has his dignity,
