An Imported Wife
Aruna and Govind were married at a very young age. They were not well-educated. They had two sons studying in a government school, in the second and third standard respectively. They were so poor that they did not have proper uniforms. Govind worked as a labourer in a timber depot, and Aruna worked as a domestic helper in three houses. Their hut was in such bad shape that it might collapse if there was a strong wind.
One day, Govind’s friend, who was working in Dubai, came to meet him. Seeing their poor condition, his friend Vikas felt very bad. He called Govind outside and said, after much hesitation, Govind, one of my friend’s family in Dubai is looking for a domestic helper to take care of their house and children. They will arrange passports and visas, and they pay very well. They specifically want an Indian helper. They asked me to find one in India. Immediately, I thought of your wife, Aruna. If you send her for three years, all your problems due to poverty would be solved.
Govind was not interested. He said that he would discuss it with his wife and give an answer in two days, anticipating her disapproval. However, to his surprise, she said, Oh, it is not a bad idea. If I sacrifice for three years, we can become rich, have a nice house of our own, and provide our children with a good education in a good school.
As she kept urging him day and night, Govind eventually agreed to his friend Vikas’s proposal.
After Aruna agreed, Vikram took her to Dubai. Aruna went with tears in her eyes. She started sending money back to Govind every month. With this money, Govind constructed a nice house equipped with all the necessary amenities. Their children were admitted to a good school, and the newfound richness could be seen throughout their home.
After completing three years, Aruna returned to India. She was spellbound upon seeing the house and the newfound wealth. That night, in their bedroom, Govind embraced her tightly and kissed her. He said, I’ve been waiting for this moment. Let’s not waste this beautiful night.
He pulled her closer to him, but Aruna pushed him away and said, I want to talk to you first.
She began telling him, In the house where I was working, my boss had an unmarried brother. He had been pursuing me since the day I joined. I pretended as if I was not aware of anything. One day, when no one was home, he forced me to sleep with him. I told him that I was married and a mother of two children. He said that it wasn’t a problem and forced himself on me. He also said that if I didn’t comply with his wish, I would have to repay the money spent on me. He took my passport and visa. I was helpless, forced to yield to his wish.
Upon hearing this, Govind could not control himself. He slapped her multiple times and said, You could have stayed there. Who asked you to come here and spoil the high image I had of you?
Angrily, she retorted, "Where is the guarantee that you were pure during these three years? Even if you were in love with another woman, we women would be angry for a week, but we would eventually accept you. However, you men would never pardon us and often resort to divorce. In my case, I was helpless, and I didn’t do anything intentionally. I was a slave to circumstances. We would live as husband and wife for the outsiders. If you’re still not convinced, you can leave my house. I can raise my children as a single parent. Trusting that you would pardon me, I came out with the truth. You wouldn’t have known anything if I had hidden the
