Eboni Dion
It has been in my heart to write about the things that I have gone through and how I have been able to overcome them. It is my hope that my story can inspire someone who is on a similar, weary journey and give them courage to keep going.

Chapter 1
S ANDRA WAS A SINGLE PARENT with three children. She
had been living in Florida since 1988, after moving from the Bahamas. It had not been easy taking care of these children. From 1988 to 1998 her youngest daughter’s dad had been taking care of them. After she gave birth to her daughter, he decided that he did not want to be around anymore.
It is December 2000, she turned 40 years old, and had never been married. Her oldest daughter Marcella had asked her to take her and a girlfriend to the mall. Sandra told her that she had to take her youngest sister Leila her. They left the house and went to pick up her girlfriend who lived in the area. She dropped them to the mall, then went back home and was lying in bed. While she was in bed the phone rang, and it was a man, that was unusual because she had not dated in a while.
The man told her that he was the dad of her daughter’s girlfriend and that he just wanted her to know that he would pick them up from the mall, and that she did not have to go out again that evening. Then he started asking questions, and did not want to hang up, they continued to talk. Sandra found out that he was a single parent also, and he had his daughter staying with him. They talked for about an hour, then he said he was going to get the girls. When he dropped her daughter off, she did not see him because he did not come in. So, she asked her daughter about him, what he looked like, but all she could tell her was he was average which did not tell her anything.
Then about twenty minutes later the phone rang, and it was him again asking if it were too late to call, she told them she would take the call. They then talked for about two hours. They continued doing this every day for the next week, then he eventually asks er to go to lunch with him. She agreed and he offered to pick her up from work, she gave him directions, but it took him about two hours to find the place. She did not know if it was her horrible directions, or he was bad with directions himself. When he finally picked her up, they went to a Chinese restaurant, which she had not been to before, and knew that she would never go back to again, it was not good at all, quick and tasteless.
This would have been the first time they would be seeing one another in person, now she understood her daughter’s difficulty describing him he was just ordinarily thin and of course she herself was ordinarily fat. She was sure they were both shocked to see what the other person looked like. Sandra was five years older; her hair was completely gray, she was taking care of herself and her three children, in a three-bedroom apartment, driving one of the latest model cars, and had an excellent job with a company that she had been with for 11 years already. On the other hand, he was much younger, one hundred pounds lighter than her, he had one child with him full time and another child who came on the weekends, he had a two-bedroom apartment, drove a car that had low payments and worked for a company on the third shift for three years.
After the initial shock they decided to see one another again. He would invite her to come by his apartment during lunch, so she would go by there and he would be in bed, she did not take into consideration that he had worked all night and that was why he was still in bed at midday. So that became their dating. She would spend all her lunch hour just watching him sleep. They did not have much to say to each other, because she realized that he was tired. That was the most she saw of him, until the weekend when they would go to Waffle house for breakfast.
That man ate enough food in the one sitting to feed three people for four days. She had never seen that in her life, but then she realized that he only ate one meal a day, so he ate everything in that one sitting. It is difficult to picture grits, eggs, hash browns, sausages, bacon, two slices of toast, French toast, waffles with strawberries, steak, or pork chops on the side as a meat, orange juice, coke, and coffee, but that is what he ate for breakfast. Despite eating all this food, he did not have an ounce of weight on him. He was more than 6ft but did not weigh more than eighty pounds.
Then after they had been seeing one another for about three weeks, one of her relatives died in Freeport, Bahamas, and asked him if he wanted to go. So, they planned the trip, and went to Ft. Lauderdale and visited her brother, and spent the whole night talking and as soon as it was daylight they went to the airport. They arrived in the Bahamas, but because they had been up all night, they were so tired, that all they could do was sleep. They had gotten a deal with their reservation, it included airfare, hotel, and transportation. Sandra had called her mother to let her know they had landed but that they were not going to make the funeral because they were exhausted.
When they finally woke up, he took out a diamond ring and put it on her finger, she was in shock, because she had not thought
