CHAPTER 1
Dad. We are off. Would you like to join us?
Where are you off to?
Taking Scotty for a little stroll.
Now don’t be long like last time. And when you two get back then we can get supper on the go.
No problem Dad.
Is Scotty warmly dressed?
Yes he is.
Angus came around the corner and looked at the family. Goodness Scotty. You seem very excited to go for that stroll!
Scotty waved his hand in the air and kicked his feet. Far.
Angus chuckled. Right.
He listened as Scotty tried to speak. Far.
Angus smiled. Not too far young man.
Tracy smiled as she pushed the little push chair out of the house. Not too long Tracy
No Dad.
And not too far.
Scotty waved his hands in the air. Far.
Angus smiled as the two of them headed out of the front door. It was the first word Scotty had ever said.
Tracy smiled as she slowly walked down the road. They walked to the corner and turned left. She passed two houses and opened the little gate at the next house. Scotty kicked his feet. Tracy knocked and waited as she came to the door. Come on in!
Tracy smiled as they walked inside. Far.
Farrah smiled as she leaned over and took Scotty out of his push chair. Ooooh this is nice. You have come to visit again!
Scotty gurgled with laughter as Farrah kissed his little tummy and blew bubbles against his cheek. And today I made some really yummy blueberry muffins. I know you are going to like that!
Tracy smiled as they all took a seat in the lounge. Scotty sat on the floor. Farrah came through with muffins, a juice bottle for Scotty, and coffee for the two of them. So, out walking again?
Tracy smiled and nodded. Needed the fresh air. Sometimes the studies are a bit draining.
Farrah nodded. I know all too well. Just don't start taking tablets or anything. That messes up your whole system.
Tracy nodded. No. I won't. I find that the fresh air seems to help quite a bit. So when I am feeling a little tired then I take a break. And obviously out for a walk.
Farrah smiled. Now how far are we actually walking?
Tracy roared with laughter. Around the corner. But just that little distance seems to help. Makes a difference when you are pushing a little push chair. Instead of walking under your own steam and on your own.
Farrah chuckled. So the folks think you are going for this nice long stroll. Meanwhile you go around the corner and then you stop here. Now where is Ben today?
Tracy smiled. Running a little late it seems. But he will be here. You don't think he is going to miss out on decent cup of coffee do you?
Farrah chuckled. I am so accustomed to seeing you every day. It is so good to have a little catch up at the end of the day.
Tracy nodded and smiled.
Angus smiled as Ben walked through. Hey Dad!
Hey Ben.
Where is Tracy? Has she already taken Scotty for a walk? Have they left? Already?
They left about ten minutes ago.
Ben smiled and nodded. Going to run and catch up.
Angus watched as Ben flew out of the door. Okay. What is it with these walks?
He sat down in the lounge and smiled to himself. At least the kids were getting some good exercise and Scotty was getting fresh air.
Farrah and Tracy looked up as Ben knocked and came through the door. Scotty waved his half eaten muffin in the air. Ben grinned. You should have waited for me.
Tracy smiled. We knew you would follow.
Farrah smiled. Muffin and coffee?
Ben nodded and took a seat. Farrah came through to the lounge with his coffee and a muffin. Awesome!
Farrah smiled. So how was your day Ben?
Ben nodded. Tiring. But today is Friday. Don’t you just love Saturday and Sunday?
Tracy chuckled and nodded. Sort of messed about for an hour today. So I will have to get back to the studies some time this weekend and do a little catch up so that I am back on track.
Ben nodded. Well. Today was pretty much the same as any other day. Apart from a few less queries. You would think some people would listen and learn. But no. Phone the help desk. That guy can help.
They all nodded. Farrah chuckled and looked at Ben. Do you enjoy your job Ben?
Ben smiled. Sometimes I do. Sometimes I don’t. It isn’t my career choice really. But it is a job and it does bring in a salary.
Farrah nodded. And we all need a salary.
Ben nodded. I guess.
Farrah smiled. Well, I am going to change shifts this week. So I will be starting at eight in the evenings. But I will still be here. As normal.
Tracy nodded. And what time do you get home?
Four in the morning. Actually it is quite a nice shift. Very busy. But you still have the whole day when you can do things. So I rather like it. Not everyone does. I come home and have my sleep till mid-day and then I have the rest of the day and the evening before I am back at work.
Tracy smiled. It must be nice to work shifts.
Farrah nodded. I opt for the odd shifts. Because I am single. Let the others take the day shifts. So that they can get home to their families at night. But my boss doesn't seem to think so. Fair is fair I suppose.
Tracy nodded. Aren’t you lonely?
Farrah smiled. I have you. And I look forward to my daily little visits.
Farrah smiled as Scotty crawled over to her and stood up against her leg. And you are enjoying that muffin. Have you eaten supper?
Tracy smiled. Scotty has. He eats a lot earlier than us. We will eat when we get back.
They all got up and Farrah put Scotty in his little push chair. He waved his hands in the air and Farrah bent down and kissed him. She pulled his hat on and fastened the zip of his jacket. Make sure you are nice and warm. Summer is coming. Not long now. And then it will be shorts and T-shirts.
She smiled as she looked at Scotty. Let me give you one more. Or would you like your favorite biscuit?
Farrah went to the kitchen and took one of each. Scotty put out his hands and took both. The biscuit went straight to his mouth. Ben chuckled. Farrah took a quick look at his gum. Soon we will see Mister Tooth. Keep on chewing.
Scotty smiled as Farrah spoke. They were soon out of the door and starting to walk home. Scotty mumbled all the way home.
Ben smiled as he pushed the push chair. I like Farrah. She doesn’t go out of her way to make us feel comfortable. It is a natural thing. When I sit there I feel as if I am at home. I can’t explain it. It is like having a Mom. You know. Kind of like you sit and chat and she listens and comments. I like that. Sometimes I wish.
Tracy smiled and put her arm around his waist. I know. But then I would prefer having a happy household. Not just an anybody. Now Farrah is different. I feel like that too. If we want to lie on the couch it doesn’t matter. You feel at home.
Ben nodded and smiled. I love Dad. I wish he was happily married.
Tracy smiled and nodded. I am glad we have Dad. And I am glad we have Farrah.
Ben nodded. Kind of like Dad one end and then we visit our Mom.
Tracy chuckled and nodded. It works for me.
Ben chuckled. It works for me too.
Ben opened the door and let Tracy and Scotty in. We are home Dad.
Angus walked through and looked at the three of them. He looked at Scotty who was almost devouring his biscuit. And what have you got there?
Tracy smiled. A biscuit and a muffin.
So where did you get the biscuit and the muffin? Have you been visiting someone?
Scotty looked at Angus. Far.
I know you went far. Did you visit someone?
Scotty held the muffin out for Angus. He took the muffin and looked at it. This is home made. And where were you?
Far.
Angus chuckled. So must I eat the muffin?
Scotty nodded.
Angus took one bite of the muffin and groaned. Okay. The three of you are keeping secrets! Do you go and visit some old lady who bakes?
Tracy grinned. A very old lady.
Ben grinned. Over the hill.
Angus smiled and shook his head. He looked at the muffin. Jolly good.
Scotty put out his hand and Angus gave him a piece of muffin. He devoured it in seconds. Angus smiled as he looked at Scotty.
Everyone ready for supper?
Angus took Scotty out of the little push chair and put him on the floor in the lounge. They all walked over to the kitchen and Angus dished up their supper. They all sat quietly and ate their meal. So Ben. How was your day?
Ben nodded. No complaints really.
Angus nodded. And you Tracy. Get a lot of studying done today?
Tracy nodded. Ben smiled. Just glad it is the weekend.
Angus nodded. Well. I guess it is nice to have a break over a weekend. Life for most seems to stop at three on a Friday.
Angus smiled as he looked down at Scotty who was pulling himself up on the chair. And you Scotty. You ready for a weekend indoors for a change. With everyone home.
Scotty smiled. Far.
Angus smiled. Yes. Tomorrow I will take you out for your stroll. Then we can really go far.
Ben smiled. No problem Dad. We don’t mind going for our daily stroll.
Angus looked at Ben. Yes I noticed the way you flew out of that door this evening. Is there someone special along the way?
Ben smiled as Tracy looked at him. No. We just like to walk. Far.
Angus nodded and smiled. He wondered if Ben had a little girlfriend along the way.
CHAPTER 2
It was Saturday morning. Farrah headed for town. She had the whole day off. She walked into the shopping center and into the grocer. She loaded the things that she needed. She added a few extra items. Things that she needed for her baking. It was so nice to be able to bake and have someone appreciating the treats. Ben, Tracy and Scotty had become part of her day and part of her life. She loved their visits. Farrah wondered about their mother and father. Tracy never mentioned her parents. Only her father. Farrah smiled to herself. She was all alone where she lived. Her brother phoned her once a month if he remembered. And her folks lived a little way away. But she was in contact with them. But then her job kept her busy. She enjoyed her days off but she thrived on work.
Angus sat in the lounge. I am going to go and get the paper. I am taking Scotty with me.
Okay Dad.
Angus drove over to the mall. He needed to get a few things from the shops to fill up their cupboards. There was always something that they needed. He didn’t do weekly or monthly shopping but liked to buy things as they needed them or as they ran out. The cupboards were never bare.
Angus parked at the mall and carried Scotty in his arms. He popped him into the trolley and walked in to the grocer. Angus smiled as he pushed Scotty. They walked through the doors and Scotty suddenly kicked his feet and waved his hands in the air. Angus looked at him. Far! Far!
Angus looked around. Scotty?
Angus looked at Scotty who was beaming. Is far a somebody?
Scotty smiled. His little hands opened and closed. Angus turned and looked at the woman pushing the trolley. He looked at Scotty. Scotty was watching her with huge eyes. That is far?
Scotty smiled as the woman disappeared out of sight. Far.
Scotty gurgled with laughter. Angus looked at Scotty and laughed and shook his head.
Angus walked in to the shop smiling. Whoever she was, she had the most amazing figure he had ever seen. She wore a pair of jeans which fitted perfectly. Showing off every little curve of her body. Her hair was shoulder length and she wore it loose. She wore a body hugging little sweater with a matching jersey. Angus smiled. Well. Next time I will go for a stroll too.
Angus smiled as he walked up and down and loaded his trolley. He kept on smiling to himself. The woman he had seen really was lovely and she looked so smart. He picked up the paper and put it in the trolley. And all we came for was the paper.
Angus smiled and looked at Scotty. Angus paid for his purchases and drove back home.
Angus stood and packed everything into the cupboards and got the pot of coffee on the go. Tracy walked through. Tracy. Far. What does far mean?
Definitely not close Dad.
Angus smiled and nodded. Now, when Scotty says far what does he mean?
Ben walked through to the kitchen. It means he wants to go for a far walk.
Angus nodded and smiled. A very funny thing happened to me today. We walked into the shop. Scotty suddenly came alive. The feet were kicking. The hands were like little stars opening and closing. And all he said was far.
Ben and Tracy smiled. Maybe he wanted to go for a far walk.
No. When I turned and looked there was this lovely young lady. Walking in the opposite direction.
Tracy nodded. Right.
So. I am thinking. That beautiful young lady could be far.
Ben grinned. Far? Now who would be called far?
Yes. That is the thing. And I am not waiting another six months to find out the rest of the far word.
Tracy roared with laughter. Far out Dad!
Ben grinned. Angus looked at the two of them. I will find out. And I would like to know where that biscuit comes from. Every time you go for a walk Scotty comes back with a biscuit. Have you tasted that biscuit?
Tracy shook her head. Have you Dad?
Well, I could not help it. I had to have a little taste. Do you know there is caramel in that biscuit?
Tracy rolled her eyes and walked out of the kitchen. Ben vanished out of the kitchen at the same time.
Angus stood in the kitchen and frowned. There was something and they were not telling. They were dodging the questions. And the little person who could tell him did not talk that much yet. Far. Okay. Farda. Nope. Farza. Farmer. Far. You know. There is no name that ties up with far.
He walked to the lounge. He looked at Scotty. Far what Scotty?
Scotty smiled. Angus sat down. Now you know what I would like to see? I would like to see the front of far. If the back view looks so good then I can just imagine how good the front looks!
Scotty gurgled with laughter. Angus sat down and picked Scotty up. And why are they hiding her?
Ben walked through. Hiding who?
Far?
Ben rolled his eyes. Dad you really are a strange man sometimes.
Angus smiled and looked at Scotty. We saw her. Scotty and I. So that is far.
Ben shook his head. We walk far.
Angus shook his head. Oh no. Look at Scotty’s eyes. The mention of that word and his eyes sparkle.
"Dad. You are safer off staying
