My thanks and love to my family for their support and encouragement. They are wonderful at putting up with all my moods when it comes to writing. And thanks to all my fans that provide the appreciation that makes this worthwhile.

Jessie sat on the hard bench and struggled not to fidget. She had arrived as late as she dared but the service still hadn't started and she knew people were staring as they walked by, looking for their own seats. She had deliberately sat in the corner of a back isle but she knew her clothes made her stand out as if she had marched up the center of the church and planted herself in the front row.

She ducked her head lower and stared rigidly at her knotted fingers. Her knuckles were white from the force she was using to hold it together. Her tightly laced fingers a reflection of her inner turmoil. She had almost turned around a million times but in the end she had came. In the deepest part of her mind; there had never been a question that she would but she had managed to almost convince herself that she would stay away. She had kept herself busy and spent so long getting ready that she almost had come too late. But now sitting there and waiting; she wondered if she was as late as she had hoped. This was no ordinary funeral and there were a lot more people than she was used to.

Someone sat heavily next to her and she stiffened in surprise. She looked up to object but stopped when a familiar old face swam into view. The swim in her vision told her that she was losing the battle not to cry but she continued to fight it anyways. She smiled a bit when a familiar knurled hand cupped her tightly wound fingers and patted them.

Jessie girl, if I had been in doubt at all as to whom I was sitting next to; your poor mutilated hands cleared it right up. Why are you hiding back here? You know he would have wanted you up closer.

Jessie shifted awkwardly and ducked her head back down as she caught sight of the horrified look on the face of the man in the next isle. She bit her lip and looked toward the old man slouched next to her.

I just came to say my goodbyes. I don't want to start a scene or upset his momma. I'll just stay here and slip out after.

Mr. Gregory sat there with his deeply grooved hands holding his old cane. He frowned and looked toward the front of the church. Jessie knew this was an illusion as the old man was almost completely blind. She patted his shoulder and assured him she was fine. He nodded finally and pulled himself up heavily. He started up the aisle and Jessie was relieved to see a young man come hurrying down the aisle to help him make his way toward the front of the church. She was relieved not just that he wouldn’t have to make his way up the isle alone but also because it cut off any other attempts on his part to convince her to sit closer to the front of the church.

She settled back into her seat and pulled the long black sleeves of her sweater over her fingers. It ruined the outfit, the sweater she had thrown over everything. She had stared at her reflection in the mirror for the longest time before adding it. She smiled a bit to picture the disgusted look that would have graced Jamie's face as he watched. But in the end she had grabbed the long black sweater with its heavy cowl and covered her outfit.

Jamie had surprised her with it way over a year ago. It had been part of the surprise he never got to give her and now she was finally wearing it. She wondered if that fact would frustrate or amuse him. With his sense of humor, there was a high chance of both. She fingered the edge of the cowl, insuring that it still draped forward and hid her face. Then she sat straighter and looked up as the music got louder, signaling the start of the funeral service.

The service was much longer than Jessie had thought it would be and looking around she was surprised by how full the church was. There seemed to be a huge amount of strangers sitting in the scuffed pews of her old church and the front was stuffed with flower arrangements. They almost drowned the sleek black casket that sat to the side of the pulpit. A large picture of a sinfully handsome young man with long dark hair and blue eyes sat beside the casket. He had a sarcastic smile and was looking off to the side at something only he could see. Jessie was very familiar with that look. She swore she had seen it a million times. It was the look he got just before he took off on some adventure only he knew about.

People stood and started to leave their seats. A great many of them first heading toward the front to pay their respects to the family or the body before leaving. Jessie continued to sit stiffly in her seat as the church began to slowly clear. She was hoping for her own chance to say goodbye but didn't want to do it with so many eyes watching, judging. She couldn't begin to think why there were so many people here for Jamie's funeral but she wanted to say goodbye without the horrified looks she knew would come.

She thought she had managed to hide pretty successfully until loud sobbing to her left made her glance up. She stiffened in horror to see the ragged face of Jamie's mother in the isle beside her. A lovely lady
