Eva cast a worried glance at the darkening sky; the sun was setting much faster than she thought. Soon it would be too dark to find her way and she honestly had no idea how close she was to the Nobel mansion. She sighed and walked a bit faster; the weight of her valise was pulling her to the side and making her shoulder ache but she refused to show up late and bare handed. She was beginning to have second thoughts about the whole idea but it was more than a bit late to be thinking that way now.

In for a penny and in for the pound, she muttered to herself. Her father used to say that a lot. Her face tightened at the memory but she shrugged off any sadness at his memory and continued to walk.

Her father had passed a few weeks ago and she had been dismissed from her post when the family she was working for decided to have a year abroad. At first she had wondered if she would end up in the poor house as good jobs that were safe for a young lady were hard to find in the town of Brooksbeak. But she had happened upon a day old paper that someone had thrown out and there in the back was an ad for a housekeeper. She had been head maid at the Crandell house and hoped almost without logic that it would be enough.

The week and a half it took to get a response to her letter of inquiry had been tense and desperate but against the odds she had been accepted. The Nobels had sent her an advance to help with her journey and offered a very generous amount. She had set out immediately after selling everything in the cottage she could. She had made it to the town of Hammlen before she had the first sense of misgiving about what seemed to be the dream job.

The small town nestled at the edge of the woods had been pretty and everyone had seemed so friendly; at least until she mentioned that she had been hired to work for the Nobels. Then she had been directed to the path that led through the woods to their home and abandoned. A farmer had lent her a small cart and horse, saying the horse would make his own way back if she let it loose. Eva had been bewildered but finally had loaded her bags and parcels without any help and headed clumsily into the woods.

It had taken a bit to get used to directing the horse but soon she was following a dark but well carved path through the woods. The trees grew close and the air was damp and cool but Eva had always been fond of the woods back home so she was content to follow the path and try not to worry too much. There were a couple forks but signs were posted to make sure travelers knew the route. She passed time dreaming about this and that as she headed deeper in and was almost thrown in surprise when the horse stopped suddenly on the path.

At first Eva had thought something was wrong but she checked everything she could think of and the horse just refused to budge. Finally she had unloaded her belongings and piled them neatly at the edge of the woods where the path left off and let the horse go. Immediately it turned and began to trot home, pulling the cart behind. Eva shook her head in exasperation and picked up her small valise and started to walk. There was really nothing else to be done.

The sun was just slipping the rest of the way behind the edge of the horizon when she came abruptly to the end of the dirt path. At first she was confused but then she looked up and noticed the large home in front of her. It was nestled in a clearing and built of stone and logs. Eva briefly wondered how they had gotten so much stone so far into the woods. But then she shrugged and all but stumbled over the cobbled walkway that led to the front stairs. She knocked and slumped against the wall.

The door was quickly answered by a frightened looking maid who relaxed slightly at seeing Eva at the door. She opened the large wooden door a bit wider and
