Larsen had planned to blow through the small town of Watson and head for a bigger city before stopping. But for some reason he had found himself slowing as he passed through the main street; and before he had really thought it through, he was paying a bored looking desk clerk and palming the key to a room at a motel not far from the center of town. There was a group of guys tuning up instruments and Larsen chose to take that as a sign there would be a band. That usually meant women and dancing so he turned to order another beer as he waited for the bar to fill up.

Several beers and a couple shots of whiskey later; he was beginning to rethink stopping in this bar or even this town. There were plenty of the usual bar flies available and more than one had offered to take a turn around the floor with him. Larsen had waved them all by. He was in the mood; the dull ache in his sac reminded him that
