Brandi waved as the little convoy of cars driven by Lindsay, Nick, and Tom pulled out of the driveway and headed off on their long journey out of Briarwood Hollow to start their new lives at a university halfway across the state. Lindsay was the second of the town preacher’s daughters to fly the coop—six months earlier Kelsey had moved into an apartment to be closer to the community college she attended. Well, that was the story, anyway. Everyone knew that what she really wanted was to be closer to Deputy Jack Thompson.

Just like everybody knew that Lindsay and her two boy toys were getting safely out of town before Daddy figured out that the three of them weren’t spending all their time alone together studying calculus. Frankly Brandi couldn’t understand how they had kept it a secret this long—between Lindsay’s playfully seductive behavior around them and their blatantly possessive stance towards her, they might as well have been carrying giant neon signs.

She jumped as her cell phone buzzed in her pocket.

Are they gone, yet? Her best friend April Prescott always sounded bubbly and excited. It was one of the big reasons why she was captain of the cheerleading squad for the second year in a row, but that boundless enthusiasm could grate after a while.
