ON THURSDAY AFTERNOONS after our chemistry class I always went home with Tara so we could puzzle out the homework together. Well, I mostly did the puzzling out while Tara complained about our professors. My grandfather has a saying, You’d complain if they hung you with a new rope. That was Tara, all right. She’d been my best friend since we met our freshman year of high school and I loved her like a sister, but the girl would curl up and die without something to bitch about.

We had started our freshman year of college and she was still finding new problems with all of our classes and professors. I forced my eyes back onto my friend and tried to pay attention to her latest rant about her English lit professor, but my gaze kept drifting over her shoulder to him. Oblivious, Tara ran on for a while before my automatic "Uh huhs" finally clued her in that I wasn’t really listening. When she glanced up and saw where I was looking her lips puckered in a little moue of irritation.
