Chapter One

Laura Carter walked down the length of her hallway and entered her eloquently decorated bedroom to look at herself in the full length mirror one last time. She wondered for the hundredth time whether she was appropriately dressed for this morning’s interview.

This was her tenth interview in just as many weeks, and she was anxious to make a good first impression. She had spent over an hour brushing her silky hair until it shone like jewels in the mid-morning sun. She had carefully selected her black jacket with a white colourless shirt and matching black skirt cut just above her knees showing off long beautiful dark legs. Laura had chosen a black pair of high heel sandals and a fashionable black handbag.

She smiled with satisfaction at herself. She looked okay. No, she looked better than okay, she looked amazing. She headed toward the front door. Would this interview be any different to the rest? She would be meeting with some well-off arrogant man who would ask her a million questions about her background, education, likes, dislikes, hobbies, and friends. In the end of the long drawn-out process, he would promise to call her if she were suitable for the job. But as usual she would go home, anxiously awaiting that call that she would never get.

She hoped this one would be different. She wanted this job. She had just graduated from college and had all the prerequisite qualifications for that job. She remembered the call had come at five thirty last evening. The voice was masculine with a deep cultured accent.

The message was brief and she was invited to attend an interview at eleven in the morning the following day.

Here you are Miss, the taxi driver announced fifty minutes after she first boarded his car. Laura handed the mature-looking Chinese man his fare and carefully disembarked the yellow car. She focused on her every movement so as not to shuffle her outfit or her hair.

With a few strides she was at the front door of the huge building, with Satin and Barnaul written across the transparent glass front door in a bold white font. In the building Laura’s eyes perused her environment as she walked up to the reception booth. An attractive redhead stood behind the booth with an earpiece mechanically answering the phone that seemed to ring endlessly. The woman was so busy that it took her a few minutes to even acknowledge Laura’s presence.

Just one moment, ma’am, the red-haired woman said, looking up briefly at Laura.

How can I help you, ma’am? she said after about five minutes.
