Prologue
Hello future bartenders,
I was prompted write this book after researching books about the actual job of bartending. I came to the realization that there is exceedingly limited literature on the topic. There are tons of good books loaded with drink recipes; however, I was searching for books that demonstrate the actual duties of the job and they were not there.
Additionally, there are many misconceptions about the job. I know when people see us working at our job, what they see only scratches the surface of our duties. People do not see us before the establishment opens and after it closes, which is when a considerable part of the work occurs.
Therefore, for those reasons, I became motivated to write this book using my 15 years of experience, knowledge, and skills. I wish to put an end to the misconceptions and portray the true image of this unique and exciting occupation.
If you are considering the purchase of this book and you are currently working as a bartender, there’s a good chance you will not learn anything more from this book. This is especially true if you take pride in your job and you are currently performing your duties to the best of your ability.
This book is for the person who is considering a career as a bartender and wishes to make an informed decision or who recently began the job and wishes to have a glimpse of what’s to come.
Throughout this book, I have included scenarios that you will undoubtedly experience and I give you examples of the way I dealt with those situations.
This book not only gives you an accurate view of the job, it also educates you on the basics. On your first day on the job, you’ll find yourself surrounded by a multitude of unfamiliar items. With this book, you will walk into the job already equipped with basic knowledge of what those items are and how they work.
I tried to include everything I could think of that you probably do not know. Some of the information may seem like common sense; nevertheless, contrary to popular belief, there’s a significant amount of information to learn at this job. That can be overwhelming in the beginning; therefore, I think you’ll be glad we touched on everything… nothing gained nothing lost.
I feel confident that in the beginning, as you are trying to take everything in, you will come across situations that I go over in this book and you’ll remember how I dealt with that particular situation.
In addition to the job duties, I include a bit of information on liquor, a look at the bar and what it consists of, and most importantly you will learn about your bar guest. You’ll learn how they think, you’ll be able to anticipate their needs, and best of all, you’ll
