About this ebook

A first-hand amusing look at the Brazilian; a modern cultural phenomenon enjoyed by millions of people all around the globe. ‘Waxxxed is something of a how-to manual for aspiring salonista mixed with a memoir of the odder moments in a career most don’t want to know about but would like a peek into. Tongue in cheek, Tamsin takes us through the dos and don’ts of a craft most of us will never see and relates a bevy of depilation doozies that will have most readers chuckling as they skip through this romp.

Having spent the better part of the last ten years immersed in a thick sea of warm wax and hairy genitals, Tamsin Ragusa, owner of an award winning Brazilian wax salon in Melbourne Australia, decided it was high time she shared her waxing stories with the world. Written by Darren Holley, a close friend, staunch advocate and unabashed admirer of her unsung vocation, Darren felt proud to help spread the word of Tamsin’s “noble work”.

Tamsin lives in Melbourne’s west with her husband Charlie, daughter Sienna and dog Milo. A devoted mother and wife, Tamsin still somehow manages to find the time needed to make sure her precious South Yarra salon is kept running to her exacting standards.

A hopeless bachelor with a quirky sense of humour, Darren lives in the trendy Melbourne suburb of Docklands. An avid reader but first time writer, Darren attributes much of finishing his first book to Tamsin’s unwavering adherence to the facts and constant input. Tamsin was very particular in maintaining her book’s authenticity and her innate ability to see beneath her client’s skins made Darren’s job all that much easier.

Tamsin and Darren are still great friends.

    Introduction

I’m not a writer, I’m not even that good a story teller, but I do want to share what I hope to be a set of entertaining tales all centered around my humble little waxing salon.

It’s certainly not meant to be a spiteful jab at unpleasant clients or a way to settle some score. If I have offended or disrespected anyone, I apologise, but I’ve tried to keep this book as honest and as blunt as I could. I really want to show that there is a lot more to this strange new vocation than simply pulling pubic hair. I offer sincere and heartfelt thanks to all of those people, both heroes and villains, who have contributed along the way.

It’s been a great experience for me. Not just to run my own little salon, but also to have the privilege of getting to know so many amazing and interesting people and sharing a small part of their lives.

    The Brazilian

The Brazilian is a waxing treatment where all or part of the genital hair is removed. Names for styles vary from salon to salon, but some of the more common are: the ‘XXX’, the ‘Landing Strip’, the ‘Y Front’, and ‘Back, Sack and Crack’.

We all know that strippers and porn stars do it, but why does your mother, sister, brother, and possibly your father do it? Well, frankly, it looks better, feels cleaner, and (perhaps most importantly) promotes erogenous sensitivity that heightens sexual pleasure. I know that no one likes to think about his or her parents ‘doing it’, but consider it marital therapy if that helps. Promoting a happier and healthier relationship through the joys of sex has got to be a good thing, right? Put it this way. I’ve yet to meet the stingy husband who hasn’t willingly thrown open the wallet to pay for his wife’s Brazilian.

The Brazilian is sexy and a little bit naughty, but did you know that it dates back thousands of years? Any anthropologist will tell you that women were once ceremonially waxed, threaded*, and even plucked by their own mothers in preparation for their wedding day. In fact, many of today’s modern cultures still practice religious variants of the humble Brazilian.

That’s not to say that Brazilians are loved by everyone. Hairy lipped, bra-burning feminists would have us believe that cutting down a woman’s sacred forest is tantamount to destroying the goddess within, and many god-fearin’ moralists are convinced that only pedophiles and freaks could possibly find anything attractive about smoothly waxed genitals. I take comfort in the fact that our society has moved to a point where a profession that openly deals with the care and treatment of our nether regions is now a part of everyday life. I think it’s a sign of our growing maturity and ability to look beyond the old social taboos and stereotypes.

The Brazilian is a modern cultural phenomenon enjoyed by millions of people all around the globe. It owes its new found popularity to seven Brazilian sisters who are credited with opening the very first Brazilian waxing salon in New York City, back in the late eighties. Before the ‘J’ sisters (so named because each sister’s name began with the letter ‘J’) hit the scene, finding a professional to wax your genitals was something that ranked roughly on the same level as looking for a Cajun witchdoctor to cure your arthritis by sacrificing a live chicken!

These days Brazilian wax therapists are specialists, trained for the sole purpose of getting your love gear to look and feel it’s very best. In the hands of a fully trained therapist, a good Brazilian wax can elevate a woman’s sexual responsiveness and give a man that confidence inspiring, illusory optical inch!

    * Threading is an ancient form of hair removal. It’s earliest practices are difficult to trace, but it is thought to have originated many centuries ago in Arabia and is a practice that is traditionally taught by family members or friends and passed down from generation to generation. It utilizes specially chosen thread that is twisted and pulled along the area of unwanted hair, lifting it directly from the follicle. It sounds horrendously painful,
