He’d been on his way home from camping with his stepdad, who’d been married to Jordan’s mother for a few years now. The trip had been a reward for finishing his first year of college. Jordan could still see the look of pain and terror that had etched his stepdad’s face when the moon had shown its face over the treetops. He’d slammed the brakes, thrown the car into park, and ran off into the woods, tearing at his clothes.

Sitting in the car, Jordan had been so surprised that he’d just watched.

That was half an hour ago. He looked at his cell again.

“Damn it,” he said. There had been a weak signal, but the bar vanished when he started dialling.

Balling his hands in fists, he brought them down on the dash.

“What a perfect weekend!” Being abandoned wasn’t the only reason he was frustrated. At school this past year, he’d finally admitted to himself that he was gay, and that he had found his stepfather attractive.

He’d come within an inch of admitting that on their last night camping.
