    DRAGON EYE

The clock told Calum that it was 8:45 pm. The trio of well-dressed young men walking past the gallery's front window reminded him it was Friday night. He envied those guys as they passed, for he’d been like them once. Being 38 and still single, it wasn’t quite so easy to get out and party and meet new people. Callum knew he still looked as those young guys did. He didn’t look like a man nearing his fourth decade at all. But standing only 5'8", every extra bit of padding on his voluptuous frame showed, and the bubble butt that he had so proudly rocked in college now openly displayed its cellulite. The world might claim it was getting more progressive, but Callum saw the reality all around him every day: beautiful gay men didn't want fat guys. Add in Callum’s education and his relatively low earning power, and he became a perfect storm of guy you’d fuck once but would never think of seeing again. At least that was how it had felt to Callum for such a long time. But he had a job he enjoyed and a handsome face that could at least lay a decent guy every now and again. Working for one of the most respected antiquities dealers in the region made for very exciting work. With the gallery closing in fifteen minutes he knew he should finish the small amount of work needed to close the place down. But their newest acquisition fascinated him too much. Pulling an errant spiral of brown hair – its curliness a legacy of his African American great-grandmother out his line of sight, he looked down at the paperwork on his desk again. Gold-gilt bronze ring: Byzantine, late 10th to 11th century. Runic inscription indicates that it likely belonged to a member of the Dragon eye Guard. Bronze rings from the Byzantine period were fairly common in antiquities circles, but rarely had Callum seen one with so much of the gold gilt still intact. It was nearly unheard of, but its authenticity had been thoroughly vetted. This was no fake. It was also unusual to acquire a piece so clearly associated with the Dragon eye Guard: the Russian and Anglo-Saxon warriors who served as the emperor's personal fighting force. This piece was going to command many times what a typical bronze ring of the era was worth. Such intrigues delighted Callum, making up somewhat for his non-existent social life. Almost.

Abruptly the door to the gallery opened. The silhouette of the man who entered looked imposing; dangerous even, with his powerful build, angular face and intense blue eyes. Callum put him in his mid-30's, but he bore an air of confidence and authority that seemed ageless. The style and cut of his clothing bespoke of a great deal of money, but potential buyers rarely came in unannounced, especially this late. Callum got up from his desk and walked over to him. Even as he stood up straight, he only came up to the man's shoulder. He turned those intense blue eyes on him and Callum became very aware of how very alone he was in the gallery. It was not an altogether unwelcome realization. The man spoke with a deep voice, in a sensual accent that Callum couldn’t place. Callum James? The broad sensual man called.

Yes. I'm sorry, have we met?

Forgive me. No we’ve not, but I am interested in Byzantine artefacts and heard that this was the place to come and that you were the person to ask.

As fearsome as the stranger appeared, Callum couldn’t help feel flattered and easily slipped back into professional mode. Our gallery specializes in all areas of mid to late Antiquity: Greek, Etruscan, Roman. As much as I wish it were otherwise, I am afraid our Byzantine selection is rather limited at present. Mostly oil lamps and other terracotta objects; a few rings. But I did my post-graduate work focusing on art produced during the Macedonian Renaissance: particularly from the reign of Basil II onward. I don't know if that makes me the person to ask, but I could certainly help point you in the right direction.

Ah yes, the man sighed, seemingly lost in memory. Emperor Basil... There have been so few like him, before and after his reign.

Erm, yes I suppose your right. He was... unique, an interesting guy to study if nothing else. The man still looked lost in thought. Callum felt distinctly unnerved, but also unwholesomely intrigued. He tried to focus. I'm sorry, sir, but I didn't get your name-- The hawkish face swivelled and the piercing eyes transfixed him like prey: a sudden and inhuman movement, especially since the rest of his body remained locked as it was. Anatole. Call me Anatole.

Uh, yes. Mr. Anatole, is there a particular type of item that you are looking for?

There is a very specific item that I am looking for: a ring.

He didn't need to say anymore. Callum already knew which ring he meant. His intense focus and bottled lethality gave it away. But how did he know? The Dragon eye ring had been purchased anonymously and only arrived at the gallery a few days ago. The gallery didn’t even have a public listing for it yet. Everything about this felt all wrong and Callum obeyed those instincts. The police would be here in minutes if he activated the panic button at his desk. He turned from Anatole, only to find him standing right in front of him, blocking the way. How did you do that?

When a man goes after something he really wants there is little that he can’t do to possess it, he said, that sleek accent making Kara momentarily forget the danger. A fine man in your profession must surely know that.

Erm I do, Callum said, wondering if he would pull the same trick if he tried to make it out the front door. "But you've clearly gone to a great deal of trouble to find out who I am and what my gallery possesses, so I think perhaps you should exercise some patience and tell me about the possessive need that brought you
