I hated my job.

After having been honorably discharged from the United States Army and having proudly served in Afghanistan for three and a half years, I had returned to my small hometown of Lancaster, South Carolina. At first, I had been excited about my Christmas homecoming, because to put it politely, being in Afghanistan had sucked. After the holidays had passed, the reality of the job situation in my old hometown had hit me like the stink of three soldiers stuck in a tank for two days straight in the 110 degree heat in the Afghan desert.

As far as jobs go, there was not shit to be had. I couldn’t even get a job being a cashier at a gas station.

My family was not wealthy. I was the second of seven kids to my awesome parents, who unfortunately did not make forty thousand a year combined. So, money was beyond tight back on the home front. Unfortunately, I had six months to kill before I left for the University of South Carolina. I had been accepted and was slated to start during the first summer semester, but that was not until June. Although my mom and dad had never said as much, I was an extra mouth to feed, so not working and living off of my parents’ goodwill for all of those months, was not an option for me.

Finally, my uncle managed to line me up with a job, but my new mission was not as nearly heroic as my stint in the Army. I was resigned to taking a job as the second shift janitor at the exclusive east coast boy’s boarding school of Lancaster Academy that was located outside of town. Built in the late 1700’s, the building was very Gothic in appearance like something out of the book Wuthering Heights, which I had read in high school. With two main towers, the school was a fairly large, housing five hundred boys. Being a janitor for a bunch of spoiled prep school boys for six months was not my dream job, but it was a paying gig, and it was honest work unlike my cousin, Rich’s, job, which was selling crystal meth.

The job was relatively easy. I swept, mopped, cleaned bathrooms and sometimes repaired junk. At first, I had dreaded cleaning up after a bunch of rich, teenage boys. Driving up in my truck on the first day, I had flashed back to how me and buddies had ripped on the janitor back in junior high. Now, that the shoe was on the other foot. I felt the need to track down that old man from junior high and apologize.

I was pleasantly surprised when none of the rich, preppy teens had tried to fuck with me at all. In fact, I had heard rumblings around school that they all were scared of me. One rumor that I had heard was that I had just been released from prison. I had laughed at that one. So, the boy’s fear of me worked out perfectly fine actually. Needless to say, I kept up the tough, ex-military dude persona and was given a wide berth by the boys. The end result was that these well-dressed, well-manicured and mostly spoiled boys showed me plenty of respect.

By the end of the first week, the boys had started calling me Big Joe instead of just Joe.

I had to admit that I did look pretty formidable. Like I had mentioned, I was fresh out of the Army and still lifted weights constantly. Standing at six foot eight inches, I weighed in at 235 pounds.
