Prayer That Brings Answers - J. Bennett Collins

INTRODUCTION

In this study on prayer we want to discuss three major thoughts: the command to pray, our conduct in prayer and our confidence in prayer.

As we look through both the Old and New Testaments we find numerous passages that reflect on the doctrine of prayer in the Bible. It is a very vital subject and we approach it to remind ourselves and others that this is one of the major features of the Christian life. It is a subject that we need to consider particularly in these days when the doctrine of prayer has been so maliciously treated by various groups of emotional, experience-oriented religions of our land.

I do not suppose I ever preach or hear a sermon on prayer but that I am convicted in my own heart that I do not pray enough and that I do not get the answers to prayer that I should. I do pray and I do get answers to prayer, but I am rebuked in my heart whenever I approach this vital subject. The cares and pressures and responsibilities of this life seem to cut into our prayer life.

THE COMMAND TO PRAY

We find in the Scripture the command very clearly and very plainly that men ought always to pray and not to faint. If we had no other reason for praying, the fact that it is an absolute, direct command of God should be sufficient. But, or course, there are other reasons that we ought to pray.

Pray Without Ceasing:

There is the command in I Thessalonians 5:17 Pray without ceasing. This means a constant and consistent attitude of prayer in our lives. There should always be the readiness to pray. Does the apostle mean here that we should spend all of our time on our knees praying? If we did so, we would not carry out some of the other commands that are given us. We could not be the witness that God would have us to be. We certainly would not have time to eat to sustain the body
