    Chapter 1

    This is just unbelievable!

    What’s wrong, Sarah?

I looked down at the certified letter I was holding in my hand. I wanted to crush it with my hand and throw it away.

Emma, my landlord is raising my rent a hundred dollars a month, starting next month.

WOW! Why would he raise it so much? It’s only a tiny one bedroom cottage?

He was talking about doing some improvements to the house, but I didn’t know I’d be the one to pay for them. Great, now what am I going to do? I can’t afford anything else.

Emma was looking at me and I could see the wheels starting to turn in her mind. I looked down at the thirty day notice from my landlord and wanted to scream at the top of my lungs. I just couldn’t believe this was happening. I had lived in that little cottage for four years.

Sarah, how would zero rent sound to you?

I just stared at her for a few moments.

Where am I going to find free rent Emma? Come on, be serious.

    Emma just smiled at me.

Sarah, my apartment upstairs is empty. I’ve been talking to Marc about making you manager of the bakery and giving you a raise. I will make the apartment your raise. There will be no utility bills except for cable, internet and phone. Here shortly, I won’t be able to come into the bakery too often, until after the baby is born. If you decided to move out of the apartment, then I’ll start paying you an actual raise. You would be helping me out and I would be helping you out. What do you say?

You trust me to manage the bakery Emma? I can’t believe this. Yes, I definitely say yes. When can I move in?

Of course I trust you, Sarah. You have been such a big help over the last seven months. I don’t know what I would have done, without you here to run the bakery. I still have a few items up in the apartment, but I can have Marc or one his brothers come by this weekend and pick up what’s left of my things. So, any time after this weekend would be fine.

I’ll call and put in my notice to my landlord right now. I’ll start moving in on my next day off.

Did you rent your cottage furnished or unfurnished?

Furnished, so I guess I need to buy some furniture, huh?

No need, there is a couch, coffee table, small kitchen table, dresser and bed already up there. I think there is still some bedding and such up there, as well. We’ll take a look at the apartment after we close today.

That would be great. Let me go make this call real quick and I’ll be right back.

I made the call to my landlord, letting him know that I would be moved out by the end of the month. I walked back out of the kitchen to the bakery. At the order counter, Emma was waiting on a customer. She looked tired and really pale. I made my way over to her and put my hand on her shoulder.

Emma, I got this. Why don’t you go sit down and put your feet up for a while.

She nodded her head and made her way to one of the small bistro tables setting against the back wall. She pulled the extra chair around, so it was in front of the chair she was going to be sitting in. She sat down and propped her feet on the extra chair. She was tired and she was getting big and she still had ten more weeks to go, before the baby was due. I was surprised that she had won the argument, with Marc about coming back to work. It was clear that she wouldn’t be able to come into the bakery to work, for much longer.

After we had closed the bakery for the day, I followed a slow moving Emma, up the back stairs to her old apartment. I looked around the clean and bright apartment. It was a lot bigger than the cottage I rented.

Emma took the time to point everything out to me. I was shown where she kept the sheets and blanket and, etc.… We looked at the stackable washer and dryer; they were tucked away in a large sort of closet in the hall. There was a nice sized attic storage area, accessible through a small door in the back of the bedroom too.

I was so excited over something as simple as actually have storage room. I glanced at Emma, she looked totally exhausted. I was really starting to worry about her health.

Emma you look so tired, sit down for a few minutes, before we go back downstairs.

You’re right, Sarah. I don’t know how much longer I’m going to be able to work. This little guy is zapping all of my strength. Marc has been bugging me to take it easy until after he gets here.

He’s right, Emma. You need to take care of yourself and that little boy right now. I can handle the bakery for a few months until you have the baby and come back.

Your right, let me talk it over with Marc tonight. I know he will be happy I’m not working. You know Marc, he’s a worrier. Let me give Marc a call so he can pick me up when he is done with his last class."

"No need Emma, I’ll take you home. Just call and let him know, so he doesn’t worry.

Emma left Marc a text message and we headed slowly down to my car. I pulled into Marc and Emma’s driveway and turned off my car. I walked Emma to her door and waited until she was inside and was safe before I said my goodbyes. I left her with instructions to go sit down and get off her feet.
