    Introduction

    Read about the exciting conclusion of the dynasties of the Kings of both Israel and Judah. This is the final chapter in a grand epic that started with First Samuel and continued through Second Samuel and First Kings. The legacies left behind by Saul, David, and Solomon continue now with two sets of kings. And we get a front-row seat to their victories, defeats, virtues, and sins. What interest can you find in the book of Second Kings, and why is it beneficial to read and study? Let’s see some background information that can help answer those very questions.

    Author

    First and Second Kings have the same author—the prophet Jeremiah. If one accepts Jeremiah as writer of First Kings, one must accept the same for Second Kings, since it is well established that First and Second Kings were once all on one scroll.

    It is very notable that Jeremiah pulled no punches when recording God’s judgments on His own people. Both Israel and Judah were repeatedly punished by God because of the disobedience of the people. Jeremiah freely expressed how such things occurred.

    Of course, Jeremiah was not only the writer of the historical records in First and Second Kings. He also clearly recorded the book that bears his name, along with the book of Lamentations. In fact, Jeremiah held a long record of faithfulness and service to God, both as biblical writer and prophet.

    Jeremiah was the son of Hilkiah, a priest of Anathoth. Jeremiah was called to be a prophet when a young man, in the 13th year of the reign of King Josiah of Judah. God told him that his birth was specially selected so that he might be God’s special servant.

    When God spoke to him, Jeremiah showed fear. He replied to God that he was but a boy and unable to be prophet. From this remark of his, and comparing his boldness and firmness during his prophetic ministry, it can be seen that such
