Introduction
A new nation is born, and a world power is humbled by its own slaves! These are some of the grand events that take place in Exodus, the second book of the Old Testament. While many are familiar with the Classic Movie The Ten Commandments, or perhaps more recent versions of the same story, a closer look at the original account cane be very beneficial for us. As we’ll see, there are quite a few differences between Hollywood’s versions and the Bible. Reading Moses words directly can be very interesting for us.
Author
So is it true that Moses wrote the story of Exodus? That is just about universally accepted. The first five books of the Bible are generally referred to as the writings of Moses, and Moses as been acclaimed as the author of Exodus in both Jewish and Christian tradition for thousands of years. The book details Moses life in a way that only he would be able to, and it continues exactly where Genesis, another book written by Moses, left off.
The story of Moses birth and early life is explained in the opening chapters of Exodus. So fear grew into hate, and a slave nation was born. However, even as a slave, the Hebrews continued to grow in number, so the Egyptian masters decided to take preventive measures. The order was handed down to the Hebrew midwives to kill any Hebrew boy that was born. They no doubt expected this would weaken the Hebrews, to be missing nearly an entire generation of healthy fighting males. However, the midwives did not listen, and kept the boys alive anyway.
Soon the Egyptians went from preventive to proactive. They went about, killing the young Hebrew boys. But one baby boy was born at that time that was hidden from the Egyptians. That boy would come to called Moses.
Moses mother put him in a small, waterproof basket, and floated him down the Nile River, no doubt praying for God to take care of him. The baby was found by none other than the daughter
