    Introduction

    W

ith hardly a sound, Paul Revere leads a large group of about 175 men and boys. They walk down the path to Griffin’s Wharf, located in Boston Harbor. Some of them have covered their faces with coal dust from the local blacksmith, and others have dressed themselves in bright colors and put on wigs to look like Mohawk Indians. As they get closer to the harbor, they see three large ships gently rocking back and forth in the water. It is a chilly night, and they can see their breath as they get ever closer to the ships.

Their hearts are beating loudly in their chests, and they are scared to death.

As they arrive at the gangway leading to the first ship, the Dartmouth, one man stands at the top and directs about 50 of the group to turn and climb on board the ship. At the second gangway, leading to the Eleanor, another 50 men are told to walk down and board it. The rest keep on walking until they arrive at the walkway leading to the Beaver, which they board.

The men and boys hold in their hands axes, knives, and lanterns. The captain of each ship quickly hands over the keys to open up the storage holds, and quietly begs the group not to harm the ship or its sails. The men don’t make a sound and they barely even whisper as they open up the storage areas of each ship and then drop down into the black darkness below. They look around for the treasure hidden inside the ship, and then they find it. The light of their lanterns falls upon a stack of crates in one corner containing tea from the British East India Company. One by one, the men form a chain and pass each box above deck.

The boxes are moved to the railing, and the men on each ship take their positions. This is a historic moment, and they all know it. They look at each other, making sure they’re doing the right thing. With deep breaths, they swing their axes to open the boxes and stab with their knives to break the bags inside before dumping their contents into the salty waters below.
