Last month, we took a look at the quintessential Old Testament prophet, Elijah. This month, we’ll consider his successor, Elisha.
Following Elijah
We are introduced to Elisha in 1 Kings 19. After Elijah’s defeat of the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel, Elijah was commanded by God to anoint Elisha as his successor (v. 16), which he later did when he found Elisha at home ploughing a field (v. 19). It appears that Elisha came from a rich family as he was ploughing with twelve yoke of oxen, a sign of considerable wealth. Elisha then served as Elijah’s (v. 21) until Elijah’s departure.
