    by Jaime Buckley

Author of Prelude to a Hero

Nothing is more brilliant, innocent or humorous than the mind and heart of a child. As a father of 11, my home is filled with love, laughter and escalating world wars between G.I. Joe and Barbie. It may be frustrating at times, but it’s always fresh, new and entertaining.

Not long ago I was sitting across the table from my daughter Jami Taylor. We both had high fevers, hunched over our bowls of cold cereal in silent misery. After a moment, my three year old snickered at me, then went back to eating. A moment later, she snickered again, only louder. When she did it a third time, I slowly set my spoon down on the table and focused on her.

What’s so funny? I asked, raising a curious eyebrow in her direction.

Jami Taylor looked at me triumphantly and grinned, milk drizzling down her chin, "I stole you’re name…now you’re just dad."

When Lafe shared the concept for this book with me, I was excited. We had gotten to know one another through Facebook and emails for nearly two years before we met. Lafe had been looking for a cartoonist and we immediately hit it off. It was our deep passion for family. Children were at the center of our Universe. As our friendship grew, I realized we both had the profound desire to be fathers of influence, while instilling an enduring love.

I’ve been privileged to meet and get to know some of Lafe’s children and I can say with bold conviction—his children are living proof that he has achieved that goal.

We finally met in 2011. Driving up from Mexico, Lafe met me in a small coffee shop to talk about this book. The moment we shook hands and I looked him in the face, I liked him. I couldn’t help it. Stout, strong and intelligent, he exuded ‘fatherhood’ in a confident and wholesome way that impressed me. What held my attention, however, was how his eyes lit up every time he talked about his family. There was no mistaking his pride…or his profound love. It’s been a great honor to call him my friend.

You hold in your hands more than 200 experiences with children and how they view everyday life through their pure and innocent perspective. These stories will make you smile. However, if you’re a parent or come from a large family like myself, you’re more likely to find yourself responding with a hearty guffaw.

    Thank you Lafe, for sharing.

    Introduction

Every single child on earth has his or her own unique personality. Of all the millions of children, no two are exactly alike. This is what makes life so darn interesting. To watch them grow up and go through the several stages of life is priceless.

My wife and I had the honor of raising thirteen children and lived in the same community with a few hundred more. Most were related, and some were not, but we knew them all by name. So dear reader, I can assure you that not a day went by without a child making us laugh or giggle, sigh, cuss or even cry. Life goes by so fast that we adults rarely take the time to notice the little things children do and say in their own small world. Children are so full of life and energy, innocence and forgiveness, that if we could emulate them more, this world would be a much happier place to live in.

One thing you can count on, kids will definitely tell it like it is. Whether it be scandalous, or just plain innocent. They are always perfectly frank. Sometimes I wonder if kids are inherently smarter then us and pretend to be innocent in order to get away with saying things in public that we wouldn’t dare.

When growing up in a large family, or around children, you will certainly get a good laugh every day from the silly and sometimes oh so true remarks that kids make. They see life as it is and will tell you so. Being politically correct like most adults feign to be is foreign to a child. They don’t beat around the bush, they just Tell It Like It Is.

When we adults repeat a story, we add a slant to it and stretch it a little here and a little there to make it sound better and of course to make us look better. I suppose that is why Christ said to become like little children. When they get kicked in the shin, it doesn’t take them but a few minutes to settle the matter and forgive and forget. They don’t take the time to think about what to say, or how to put it, they just say what’s on their mind and accept the consequences.

It is endless entertainment just to watch kids play…and fight for that matter. If one gets wronged, they usually take immediate and appropriate action, by smacking, kicking or biting their opponent. Or, by letting the whole world know just by the sound of their voice. If we adults indulged in such every day activities, there would be a continuous war in the world.

You must never underestimate the intelligence of a child. They are much smarter than we give them credit for. If you don’t want your child to repeat the obnoxious things you say, then don’t say it within a half mile of their big ears. If you don’t want the young ones telling their friend that "Dad and Mom was kissin’ and huggin’ then don’t be making-out in their presence. If you don’t want your child to cuss and swear like you then put earmuffs on them whenever you’re in a bad mood.

A child’s parents are his super-heroes. He or she will faithfully imitate their parent’s every word and action. I remember when I was a child, I looked up to my dad in
