From all accounts, there’s a lot of unzipping going on out there. One-night stands have probably always existed. But post-Pill, post sexual revolution, post-AIDS, post-feminism and post-just-about-everything, there’s more willingness to talk about them. They are a part of the sexual landscape and most adults have a story or two – of their own – or a second-hand account to tell. Is a one-night stand only about lust, or is it about other basic human needs?

Lust might well fuel a casual sex encounter, but there may be other reasons as well. Complex dynamics might well be at play, or it might simply be a matter of ‘He’s hot. Why not?’ Does the one-night stand leave you feeling guilty, lonely and inadequate or has it provided a high that’s put you on top of the world – temporarily?

When we think of the words ‘one-night stand’, we might think no ties, no commitment and no regrets. We think of selfish pursued pleasure.

Anyone for a one-night stand?

Let’s get to the crux of the issue. When people say they don’t approve of one-night stands they usually do so because of one of society’s enduring taboos – they believe that sexual pleasure without love is morally wrong. When sex is separated from a loving, committed relationship, most of us feel a little uneasy. What is the value of sex? Do we basically believe it has intrinsic value or are we unsure when love is not part of the equation?

Yet, the evidence suggests that it’s not only those of ‘loose morals’ who indulge in one-night stands. A one-night stand, based on accounts of the experience, is often represented as something positive. It’s a lift for the wounded ego. It’s an adventure. It’s a cure for a broken heart. It’s a way of finding love. It’s….potentially all these things and more. So, the one-night stand can be seen to be somewhat of a panacea. But is it? Or is it only the snake-oil of the modern dilemma of lust, love and relationships?

So what are the parameters of casual sex? Is it okay for everyone – at any age? Or is it only okay if you’re young, single and not having one-night stands every other night?

Like anything in life, a one-night stand can be explained. And explained away. Maybe it was summer and she couldn’t help herself or maybe she was looking for love. Perhaps he was out drinking with a group of guys, got bored and wanted that extra little bit of excitement, or perhaps he wanted forbidden fruit and took advantage of his best friend’s absence and his friend’s girlfriend. It can be justified – it happened because you needed it, whatever the consequences. And it can be something you can’t forgive yourself for – how will you ever live down the shame of it all? All of these things can be at play, either singly or in combination.
