Lauren approached the brownstone apartment building with nervous anticipation. She wasn’t nervous about what might happen to her: it was a nice neighborhood and she’d spoken to Tim at length on the phone—he seemed like a genuinely nice guy. She was more nervous about what she might do. But she hadn’t agreed to anything yet. They were just going to meet and talk, see how she felt. Then she would decide if she wanted to go ahead with it.

She recognized Tim’s sprightly voice over the intercom.

Oh, hi, I’m so glad you could make it. Come on in and go straight downstairs. I’ll buzz you in.

Lauren descended the stairs to the basement apartment. As Tim opened the apartment door to let her in, mixed feelings of sexual gratification and sly transgression billowed inside her. She still hadn’t done anything, but entering the apartment was like breaking the seal of inhibition, flirting with an unthinkable act.

Tim had a curly head of unkempt hair perched on a thin, angular frame. He wore a loose Hawaiian shirt, khaki shorts and a pair of well-worn sandals.
