Lisa, an ambitious, assertive women, dreams of making it as a professional triathlete. Chapter 1

The front desk phone sounded two short rings, indicating it was the internal line.

Excuse me, Peter said to a customer, and picked up the phone. Hey.

Get your peter back here, Jake said.

Jake never tired of using the vulgar alternate meaning of Peter’s name. Peter didn’t exactly enjoy it, but he wasn’t one to complain. Besides, Jake treated him fair enough when it came to his wage and responsibilities around the gym. A little ribbing was no big deal.

Peter finished with the customer and walked across the main workout area, weaving through treadmills, bench presses and other gym equipment, toward Jake’s office. He eyed the ass of a girl in tight stretch pants, her ponytail bopping wildly about as she chugged away on a stairmaster. That was another thing that made working at Jake’s Gym not so bad: He’d never have the chance to be around so many hot girls in skimpy outfits otherwise, at least without paying for it. At 21, he’d long ago learned that such girls were way out of his league. But he still enjoyed watching and fantasizing—it fueled his imagination for when he’d beat off later on.

Jake was talking to his girlfriend, Lisa, in the entryway of the hall that led to his office. You left your jaw on the floor back there, Jake said to Peter as he approached. Lisa and Jake laughed, and Peter shrugged and let out a meek puff of air in an attempt to laugh along. Peter looked at Lisa, then immediately to the floor. He never knew what to say when he was around her and was afraid to embarrass himself.

I’m gonna work on my core a little more, Lisa said, and wind down with a couple miles on the treadmill. She ignored Peter as she turned and walked away.

You’re a warrior, babe, Jake shouted after her, then motioned with his head for Peter to follow him to his office. You noticed that one on the stairs, huh? Just joined last week.

    Oh yeah? She’ pretty hot.

Pretty hot? Dude, she’s fucking smokin’. The definition of those legs—that’s artistic. Like a goddamned sculpture.

Peter trailed Jake into his office, a run-down room that had yet to reap the benefits of the many renovations Jake had done to the gym. Chipping paint and water marks marred the walls and ceiling, and a rickety door with a circular hole where the doorknob used to be barely clung to its hinges. Framed posters of runners and mountain climbers with titles like Perseverance and Achievement hung on the walls.

But a girl like that ain’t gonna settle for any old noodle arms, Jake added. Gotta do the curls for the girls, my man.

    Yeah, I know, Peter said.

You know, huh? Then how come I haven’t seen you on the equipment lately?

Almost immediately after hiring Peter, Jake began suggesting, teasingly at first, then, after Peter started working the front desk, with more seriousness, that he tone up his physique. It wasn’t a good image for the gym to have the first person people saw when they walked in look like he was allergic to exercise. Peter tried doing some bench presses and butterflies, and he felt like his chest and upper arms may have hardened a bit—they certainly hurt enough—but with his scrawny legs and flabby mid-section it seemed hopeless.

He didn’t understand people like Jake and Lisa. What was the point of all that rah-rah enthusiasm about how much weight you could lift or how fast you could run? Despite the hot girls, he sometimes missed his job at the convenience store, where the people were friendlier and he could munch on a bag of chips without feeling like he was breaking the law.

I’ve been meaning to but I’ve been kind of busy lately, Peter said.

Jake ignored the comment and had Peter help him figure out a computer program that would help keep track of the gym’s financial and membership records. Peter toiled away on the computer while Jake sat back and flipped through a copy of Muscle & Fitness, occasionally glancing at a monitor hooked up to a camera in the lobby to see if any customers came in.

Oh, I’ve been meaning to ask—are you busy this weekend? Jake said casually.

No, Peter said, assuming Jake was going to ask him to work an extra shift.

Good. I was hoping you could do me a big favor. Lisa has the Ocean Beach Triathlon in San Diego, and you know that fitness expo—I think I mentioned it, it’s at the Convention Center—I thought it was next weekend, but it turns out it’s this weekend. Lisa needs someone to help with equipment and shit like that, and I always go with her, but it’s important for me to go to the expo. When I found out they’re at the same time, I was like, ‘Fuck.’ I’m totally in a jam here.

Peter immediately wished he could take back his answer. I, ahh…

Everything’s covered of course—room, food—and I’ll give you a hundred fifty bucks for your time. It’ll be easy, and a big help. Whatta you say? Would you be able to go?

Peter felt anxious just thinking about it. Did you tell Lisa?

Not yet, but don’t worry, it’s cool. She likes you, and she gets so focused when she’s at these things, I swear, she wouldn’t notice if the Governator himself was toting her shit around.

Peter’s shoulders slumped, his eyes fixed on the computer screen. Who’s gonna cover the desk when you’re at the expo?

Don’t worry about it, I’ll deal with it. Ryan can probably do a couple shifts, and I can always get someone from an agency if I have to. Lisa was expecting me to go; I can’t bail and leave her totally hanging. Whatta you say?

Peter both dreaded and was fascinated by the idea of being alone with Lisa for a whole weekend. She was everything he wasn’t: attractive, ambitious, assertive. And yet he couldn’t help but feel a strange infatuation with her. He was pretty sure she despised him, despite what Jake said. But he thought that if he got just one chance to be with her, he was sure he could please her.

    Chapter 2

Peter had previously worked for four years as a cashier at a convenience store. It was a low-stress job and he got along with his boss and co-workers. He even met a girl there, not really a girlfriend, but as close as he’d ever had to one.

Tracy was a college junior majoring in biology, and she already had her career path planned out. After college she would enroll in veterinary school, then work under someone to gain experience and make enough money until, by age 30, she would open her own veterinary clinic.

Her aptitude and ambitiousness were evident even at the convenience store. Peter trained her, and she caught on so quickly that she was running her own shifts within a few days. Peter lost some hours as a result, but he didn’t complain. He was glad she worked there, especially when they got to work together. Tracy was outgoing and friendly, and Peter found it easy to talk to her. She led the way conversationally, and Peter, as he was accustomed, followed her lead.

In between serving customers, Peter listened to Tracy go on about her schoolwork, a professor she disliked, or her crazy family, and they would rehash Doctor Who episodes and debate Star Trek vs. Star Wars, Peter’s mastery of the subject never quite overcoming Tracy’s force of persuasion. They started to hang out away from work, often cooking supper at Tracy’s apartment and watching TV or a movie, usually while Tracy did homework.

Tracy was a plus-sized girl, not bubbling over with fat, but tall and thick with large breasts and a round ass that were proportionate to her Rubenesque figure. She considered herself attractive, but she’d known for many years now that, with her body type, her sexuality wouldn’t open any doors for her like it would for some women. She would have to open those doors herself. Thus she developed a confident and extroverted personality, a personality that, while allowing her to excel in areas academic and professional, did put off some members of the opposite sex. She’d had a boyfriend before, and she didn’t doubt that she would find a suitable man to marry in due course, but at the present time her sex life was lacking. She wasn’t inclined to one-time hook-ups, primarily because she resented the lack of respect that frequently accompanied them, especially for a girl with her body type. She preferred something longer-term, even if it wasn’t intended to be permanent.

When she first met Peter, he was little more than an afterthought, the timid cashier who mumbled too much. But after working with him a few times, she found they shared some interests, and he was a good listener and a competent person if somewhat of a pushover. In fact, she thought, perhaps he was just the person for her needs.

Tracy and Peter hung out a few times and soon established a nascent friendship. She began to pepper their conversations with bawdy comments, frequently about her breasts and their inordinate size or a past boyfriend who, according to her, had been very kinky.

Ugh, these things drive me crazy, she said. They were at her apartment watching TV. She held her large breasts over her shirt. You’re lucky you’re a guy. How would you like to have an extra fifteen pounds hanging off you all the time?

    Fifteen pounds? Peter said.

At least. And I swear they’re getting bigger. She pulled the cups of her bra out and adjusted them on her breasts. None of my bras fit me anymore."

Peter didn’t know how to respond at first. He was titillated by her mentioning her breasts, but mostly he felt awkward, unsure of what to say. He enjoyed her company and didn’t want to do anything to ruin their friendship. He quickly accepted the comments as part of her personality, figuring her willingness to talk so openly was a sign that she considered him a good friend. Though he would have been too afraid to initiate anything sexually, even if he wanted to.

One time Peter went into Tracy’s room to look for a CD while she was in the bathroom wiping spaghetti sauce off her shirt. She walked into her room with her shirt off, her voluptuous breasts nearly popping out of her bra. Peter, she said, only a mild reproof, barely bothering to cover herself. He scurried by her saying, Oh, sorry, though unable to resist peering at her breasts out of the corner of his eye.

    I can’t believe you, she
