Don't Rush Life - Thomas A. Williamson Jr.
Introduction
It all started in a small town in western America. I was eating appetizers sitting with a friend during happy hour. We were having a conversation about what other career jobs were feasible opportunities. I was considering going through an internship as an electrician. I thought I could become a journeyman to provide the opportunity to have my own electrician business abroad and be with my kids. My friend happened to be looking through my journal and read one of my poems. He said, You’re not going to wire anything. You’re going write a book. People need to hear this.
He was touched, by the statement, Although the odds are put there for a reason . . . moving forward is the season.
This inspired me to write more. So I did, on little pieces of paper, my journal and napkins. My poetry became so popular locally, people were requesting them daily. It got to the point where I had no time to socialize or shoot pool. It dawned on me that I had to make money with this gift. It was very rewarding to me to stimulate people’s heart chakras.
I was working part time as a dishwasher and I was on a roll but, I got stuck. I didn’t have any music to inspire me. I told my coworkers what I was up to and one of the cooks gave me dozens of music CD’s. This was such a blessing. However, I didn’t have anything to play the music on. I needed one more tool, a portable CD player. I said to myself I am going to get a CD player tonight
. I was determined. I tried to borrow one from a few people I knew and I was even willing to pay someone to rent their CD player.
Low and behold, a total stranger gave me a CD player. After working the late shift, I was walking across the street and saw a man walking towards me with his bike. It was 3am and he appeared to be bit drunk. He greeted me with a friendly hello
and we ended sitting alongside the road and I told him my story and my search for a CD player.
He mentioned he had to head home to his wife and four year old daughter. I wrote a
poem on the spot for his daughter. As he was leaving he reached into his back pack
and pulled out a Portable MP3-CD player ($90 value) and said, You need this more than me
. This was the moment when I looked into the sky and said to myself, I am definitely supposed to write this book.
A few days later I ran into a lady at the bus stop who mentioned she had won a poetry contest. She gave me the info and I entered the contest. The poetry contest rule was one poem submitted per six months. I wanted my name on all my work so I submitted 141 poems in 48 hours. Once I submitted them I saw they all had no titles. This motivated me to create some titles for the poems.
I spent the next several years trying to find the right publisher and the money to pay for it all. Meanwhile I decided to dedicate the book to my kids. My initial plan was to contact Oprah Winfrey’s staff and asked to be put on her show. My second attempt to reconnect with my kids was to send a letter to my ex wife. My mother had some contact with them so I decided to send a letter of reconciliation via email to my mother.
My mother forwarded the letter and shortly after she went to visit them. When she came back I saw photos of them for the first time in 10 years. I eventually got their address and sent a letter asking if would be okay to send letters to each other. Several months went by and one day I got a call from my ex informing me she was bringing the kids for Christmas. I spent my first birthday and holiday with them. It was a miracle.
I shared the poems with the kids and said it will
