Barbara Hayes worked on the editorial staff and spent many years writing stories and picture strip scripts for the Amalgamated Press, situated in Farringdon Street, which is round the corner from Fleet Street, London. Later Amalgamated Press became Fleetway Publications and subsequently part of the Daily Mirror IPC publishing group.Barbara was just in time to work with some of the old Fleet Street hacks in all their drunken glory before the move away from Fleet Street to modern technical respectability. She got advice straight from the lips of Hugh Cudlipp, the famous editor of the Daily Mirror, and became married to an Amalgamated Press editor, Leonard Matthews, who rose to be a managing editor and then an editorial director.Over the years she has had some 80 books and about 7300 scripts published by companies from England to Australia to South Africa to Florida and back to Holland. She likes to think of herself as an old hack writer who succeeded mainly because she always got her work in on time and the right length - but if you read on carefully you might find quite a few other hints to help you.

Introduction
Dear Grandmas, Grandpas, Mummies, Daddies, Aunties or Uncles,
This book is intended to help you fill the long hours when you are looking after your little grandchildren/children/nieces/nephews.
There are stories to read which are specially written to appeal to the young age group. Mixed in with the stories are ideas for simple activities to make a change from sitting reading.
I have made the stories and activities revolve around teddy bears and plain paper and crayons. This is because most households with children already have these things and no extra expense will be involved.
Of course with all the stories and activities, you must be the judges of what is suitable for your children. You know them best and like Bossy Boots Bear, you are in charge.
You will see, when you come to read the stories that they are written as if you are talking to the little listeners. And every now and then the storyline breaks off for you to turn and make a remark direct to the child. I have done this because I found from years of being Mummy/Grandma/Friend Next Door that children like you to draw them into the story and ask their opinions about what is going on. It also gives the children a chance to sit up, stand up and chat and breaks up the sitting still and concentration on listening. I hope you find the same.
Again where I have put in the word Grandma, you may sometimes wish to change it to Grandpa/Mummy/Daddy/Auntie/Uncle. Not always of course. You need to keep your wits about you on this Grandma job.
One other thing. You will see that most of the activities are quite simple. This is because they are for the younger children, but also because if there are older children present, they will enjoy being able to do the tasks well and looking clever. At least that has always been my experience.
Anyway that has told you something about the book. I hope you find it helpful — I do — every Wednesday when I look after my little granddaughter!
Yours
Grandma
About the Teddy Bear Club
I am a Grandma and I have been around for many years — more than eighty actually.
Now in that time I have met a lot of children and their teddy bears — big ones, small ones, old ones and young ones (the teddy bears that is).
I have also heard a lot of stories about what goes on in Teddy Bear Land. Now no one knows if Teddy Bear Land really exists or not, but a lot of us like to think it does and we make up stories about what the teddy bears do there.
I can remember the games we played and stories we made up about my own teddy bears when my sister and I were young, the same with my own children and neighbours’ children who came round to join in. My little son, who is grown up now of course, was given a white teddy bear as a present when he was little. He called the bear Snowy and here is a photo of him. We have kept him safe all these years. Then the years went by and I played teddy bears with one grandchild and then after a few more years another little girl grandchild.
When my son was a baby he was given a white teddy bear, we called him Snowy Bear. We still have him, but he is getting a bit threadbare from all the loving and cuddling. If you r little folk have favourite teddy bears, they could bring them to your get togethers and say you are starting a Teddy Bear Club of your own.
The children wanted to know where teddy bears had come from — so I told them, well as much as I knew anyway.
Then the children said they wanted us to make up stories about a Teddy Bear Land and what the bears used to do there.
So we did.
Over the many years we told stories about Postman Bear and Nurse Bear and Wake up Early in the Morning Bear and Scribbler Bear and of course Bossy Boots Bear. No one dare leave Bossy Boots Bear out. And lots of other teddy
