About this audiobook
Shield of Sparrows is a slow-burn, high-stakes romantasy perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas and Rebecca Yarros—where enemies become lovers, monsters stalk a cursed realm, and a forgotten princess finds the strength to tear off her crown and become the warrior she was never meant to be.
The gods sent monsters to the five kingdoms to remind mortals they must kneel.
I've spent my life kneeling—to their will and to my father's. As a princess, my only duty is to wear the crown and obey the king.
I was never meant to rule. Never meant to fight. And I was never supposed to be the daughter who sealed an ancient treaty with her own blood.
But that changed the fateful day I stepped into my father's throne room. The day a legendary monster hunter sailed to our shores. The day a prince ruined my life.
Now I'm crossing treacherous lands beside a warrior who despises me as much as I despise him—bound to a future I didn't choose and a husband I barely know.
Everyone wants me to be something I'm not—a queen, a spy, a sacrifice.
But what if I refused the role chosen for me? What if I made my own rules? What if there's power in being underestimated?
And what if—for the first time—I reached for it?
Contains mature themes.

I have never in my life DNF to book with 10 chapters to go. I did not enjoy with any of the characters. It was less interesting than I expected from other reviewers definitely needed more character development, and lot of plot holes where I just got to thinking this doesn’t make sense sorry to say it wasn’t for me - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5

Loved this!!! There was a few chapters near the end it hit a bit slow, then the ending was definitely set up for another book. I wasn’t a big fan of how it was finished, it felt rushed. But the first 50some chapters, wow, so good. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5

Great engaging story. Least satisfying ending ever. If you don’t need a satisfying ending, I highly recommend it. But if you need a plot to wrap up nicely after 18 hours, this is not it. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5

Holy Moly Devney Perry ..why havent you written Fantasy before this?
This book was completely bingable..darn adulting having to work and sleep because i would have read it all the way through in one shot. The characters ..the completely magestic world building . THE MONSTERS! MA'AM! This book has gone to my #1 fave book of 2025..overall period ..end of.
Ransom : lets begin with how he fell for Odessa from the moment he saw her. But there were oath bonds and secrets and just a valley of 46 chapters to get to the truth. He is completely fearless..a hero to his people but to her..he taught her to fight, to defend herself..that goes beyond burning the world down for her. That was love without speaking it.He loved her every moment before the words were actually said. He took her sass and ..gods the way his eyes changed! I really hope when this comes to the big screen they figure out how to do that..change his eyes to deep green to grey to that burning orange at the end.
Odessa ..her currious mind always asking questions , she had the biggest character arc I have seen since Brexley Kovacs in Stacey Marie Brown's Savage Lands series or Helene from Sabaa Tahir 's Embers in Ashes series. She learned she was strong, she learned she was brave , she learned she was capable of standing against a King.
This was the slowest of slow burns ..Ransom ..oh Ransom how I wish we had your point of view throughout this book!!!! So many secrets finally unfolded from chapter 46 on to the end of the book, and the cliffhanger at the end ! I cannot wait to read the next book . This has moved to my most reccomended book of 2025!
Naration: give Samantha Brentmoor the Audie this year Audible! She so deserves it for her performance as the sole narrator through 62 chapters of this book Her male voice as Ransom was ??. Publishing companies please stop giving full billing to male actors that read an epilogue it really is not fair to the reader or thr female narrator that carried the performance of the whole book. The reader is expecting to hear dual narration at the very least. Please say final chapter read by Jason Clarke..who was perfect for Ransom's character, it would have been nice to have heard him sooner than the last chapter.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ are not enough. - Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5

This is a joke right? The MMC is supposed to have a deep voice…. And it sounds like the narrator for the MMC is a kid for the first 62 chapters. A very unappealing voice. Then Chapter 63 (the last chapter) has a completely different male narrator with a deep voice.
As for the book itself, I was not impressed. I felt like everything was so predictable and boring from the beginning. When it comes to a fantasy book, the author should knock my socks off with surprise because there are no limits to what can happen in fantasy. This book was a snooze fest. Even the parts that were supposed to be sad, were not even a little emotional for me because this book just didn’t grab me. I felt no connection to the characters by the end. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5

I started reading this on my Kindle, but it was kind of slow, so I decided to listen instead. I’m glad I did, the story was great, I really enjoyed it & from the ending, can’t wait for the next book!
The narration was not great. The female narrator had such a whiny voice through the entire story, her voice for the child was like nails on a chalkboard. The male voice was horrendous- it reminded me of the ‘hey Pwincess, where are you pwincess’ guy on TikTok. There’s no way I’m going to believe ‘The Guardian’ sounds like that & Odessa didn’t laugh in his face. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5

I NEVER write reviews but had to for this book!!!!
Ok so like the first 30 chapters or so I was like "are they ever going to get to the point?!" Not that it dragged on, I really enjoyed the story line and development but the FMC asks tons of questions and nobody really ever answers them which left me in turn, also wanting answers. It is absolutely a slow burn, but I really love the relationship development. There are some themes that we've seen in some other romantasy books and thats all well and fine but THEN, the twists really start hitting. And they dont stop until the end of the book. Which leaves on a pretty major cliff hanger but I was literally silently screaming and punching the air bc HOLY SH*T the very end of the book kind of answers a lot while leaving SO MANY QUESTIONS and the perfect set up for the next book!!! I absolutely understand why the rating for this book is so high. Really likable characters with good development. Interesting take on a magical world with monster slaying. Super cool world building and easy to understand the creatures, characters, and world this takes place in. I know this book has already been picked up for a movie and I just hope they do it justice!!! Can't wait for the next book! Oh also, really loved the narration! That's always a plus. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5
