About this audiobook

Something lurks in the darkness of the trees...

A group of friends goes on a hike in search of an ancient spring deep inside the forest. Mythical stories come from the woods - tales of gnomes, fairies, and other not so benevolent creatures. Everything changes for the group when they run into a hiker that mysteriously vanished in the area weeks ago. She is malnourished, dehydrated, and hurt, but she keeps raving about the danger in the woods, repeating one incoherent word over and over in a foreign language. By the time they turn back the way they came, it's too late.

There's something ancient in these woods.

Something far more dangerous than fairies and gnomes.

And it's after them.

Premiss has been done so many times and much better than this version. Characters were not gripping, nor was their dialog believable. There were attempts at action and descriptivness, but nothing driving the story into excitment. The author mostly skimmed the surface but had a few good moments toward the end...I wished they were more frequent. The narrator didn't help, his monotoned delivery may have played a part in the lack of excitement... the whole thing was perdictible and just ok.

Not terrible, and the monster was different than I personally have found in a book before, though that's not saying much because monster books aren't generally my bag.
This felt like a short story to me, but that was fine for this story.
It didn't blow my mind, but it did entertain me and keep me from thinking about my own problems as I was listening
